Drilling carbon fiber

How does everybody drill carbon fiber. I always seem to get a decent sized blowout, this is with sharp bits, and backing the cf with a piece of hardwood. It doesn't seem to matter if I go fast or slow. I tried a search but couldn't find any helpful info.

I just swap the handle scales around after drilling so if there are any "Blowouts" they are inside against the handle, where the damage will never be seen..

I'm kinda scratching my head on this one. I use cheap drill bits, don't use a backup board and don't get anymore blowout than with Micarta or G-10. I think I "feel" when the bit is passing thru the other side and ease up on the pressure.

Would it help to drill a small pilot hole and increase the size in small increments?
I have just started working with CF. Have not drilled any holes yet. It is to expensive to practice with.

Thanks & Be Blessed
