drilling for a thumb stud?

I was wondering if anybody here has drilled through a blade for a thumb stud before. I have a Gerber Gator that I want to put a thumb stud on from an old Cold Steel scimitar(POS). I don't think the steel on the blade is that hard, but my drill press says differently. I believe the hole needs to be 5/64, and I have already broken many bits trying. Is there a special drill bit I need or process? Will a carbide bit make that much of a difference? I have drilled for hours, and all I got was a small dimple on the blade and broken drill bits! I don't need to thread it, just get the dam hole through! BTW, I HAVE used the search, but nothing really answered my question, and no I don't just want to go out and buy the gator w/ the thumb stud. Thanks for any tips you may share. :grumpy:

I forgot to add that I don't want any clip on one arm bandit flipit junk either
