Drilling scales and super glue.

I have seen a number of folks suggest gluing scales to a tapered tang with a couple drops of super glue when drilling them instead of trying to use clamps or "tapering" the outside surface scales to match before drilling. I have a setup to do this using a drill press vice and file guide, but my question is how do you do this with G10 liners and then manage to remove the scales without destroying them?

One or 2 drops and they will pop right off the tang. It has never damaged the liners when I've done it. I just hit the liner side on some sandpaper on a surface plate when I'm done to remove the residue.

I usually put them in the freezer for a little while first, it seems to make the glue break easier. But either way, a sharp rap against a piece of wood or similar should do the trick...if it dosent then you're probably using too much glue.

A little glue goes a long way. I’ve also seen guys putting painters tape on each side, then gluing the tape together. Makes cleanup a bit easier.

Epoxy the liner to the scale first. Then super glue the liner to the tang.Rap the scale to knock it off the tang. Use a small, very sharp plane to take the super glue off the liner.

The advice given works, but I started using hot glue along the edge of the knife against the scale. It will release with some denatured alcohol and the cleanup is much easier that superglue. You might still need a clamp depending on how you are supporting the scale. I broke a scale once trying to remove it and it prompted the change.

i am sure you have already done it, but for next time if you leave the liner shiny without scuffing it will pop off easier.

Well, it worked......kinda. Suffice to say that those old ads where the super glue lifted a truck are BS. The scales were coming off before I had all of the holes drllled. Fortunately, I had enough of them drilled to hold the package together with corbys and the lanyard tube for the last couple of holes. I now see why guys drill out or skeletonize tangs instead of tapering them. LOL

If you get the liners hot, the glue fails. Drilling holes gets things plenty hot.

I use super glue to glue the scales together to shape the fronts. I use super glue to hold the scales( still glued together ) onto the tang to get the holes started. I begin all holes into the first scale then pop the scales off of the tang and finish drilling through both of them at the same time. But with the tapered tang that might not work?

Then a quick run on the disc grinder to remove the super glue from the scales/liners. Razor blade off the super glue from the tang. It is pretty quick and foolproof which is why I use it!
