Drop Leg Sheath

Here's my first effort designing and sewing nylon:

I got an NMSFNO and a sheath from Eric at Mashed Cat. The knife is too big to carry on the belt IMO, so I turned Eric's sheath in to a drop leg. I ordered the sheath with slots for this purpose, so that part was taken care of. Luckily there's a great store nearby called Seattle Fabrics that caters to the sailing industry and carries everything nylon and attachment related that's easy to browse and figure out what would work while you're there, and no shipping of course.

The vertical strap is 2" double-wall nylon webbing. I don't know the load rating, but my belt loops will rip long before the strap does. I had a kydex sheet lying around and cut a backing piece to fit and drilled the holes to secure it. The female buckle is sewn to the strap. The top is looped around the male buckle and threaded back through a single bar slider. The handle had a tendency to ride "out," so I threaded elastic shock cord in between the two layers going through the slider and lined it up with the thin part of the handle and secured it with a cord lock. Release the cord lock and the loop easily slides over the end of the handle.

The leg strap is 1 1/2" single thickness nylon strap. I added some 1 1/2" elastic (the white showing) on the inside rear portion; it gives the leg strap about 1/2" of stretch before the strap become taut. Again, I sewed the female buckle and looped the strap through the male end and back through a slider for adjustability.

I plan on testing this rig soon by chopping some fallen limbs; not a hard test for the sheath, but I'm guessing it will perform.

That's a good idea, and well-done. I think the NMSFNO is a perfect candidate for a drop-leg rig.
