Drop Point Vs. Tanto

Being newer to the knife community...I've got a question for the experts.

What are the pros and cons of the drop points and Tantos?

For those that prefer one or the other...why?

Thanks

A drop point gives a knife the "belly" that allows for good slicing and chopping.
A tanto usually gives increased tip strength for hard stabbing, but most tanto knives won't slice as good as a drop point. The tanto seems to have been designed for combat purposes, providing a strong tip to stab through armor. The drop point will stab fairly well, but is also better suited for more utility tasks such as skining game, slicing fruit, and cutting fabric. My opinion is that a drop point knife will be better for all-around use than a tanto, and any tactical advantage that is gained with a tanto is not a fair trade for the utility that the tanto gives up to a drop point.

I agree. That's what I've seen with my Kershaw Blur (Tanto). I'm wishing that I'd got the drop point since I use it mainly for everyday uses and not stabbing people.

Amen. Thankfully I got switched to a different knife, the corner on mine was wearing out. Don't get me wrong, love my Kershaw Tanto Blur, but really wish I coulda got the drop point instead as well. S'okay though, got a real big knife to replace it.

I saw a booth at the Shotshow selling a drop point blur for 35 bucks and I almost bought it. I really like the Blur design but I'm going to hold out for one of the ESEE folders. I am also saving for a BK2. I will retire this Tanto soon...very soon.

As stated above, tanto points are meant specifically for thrusting power - very specifically to jab through bamboo armor. Very specific application.

Drop points are more versatile, but perform less well in things like stabbing through a car door.

(Why you need to stab a car door, I don't know...)

Why do you need to stab a car door? Why that is so simple! To stab what was on the other side!

This would probably work best for stabbing through a car door...

I recently changed my EDC from a CQC7 with a tanto point to a BK14. I can agree that the tanto is far less versitile than the drop point of the Eskabar. My 14 outperforms my former edc by a mile for everyday needs.
