I had some free time this morning. I spent it well.

Grabbing my wife's favorite mug and filling it with hot, sweet coffee, I took my BK3 outside for some fun. I bought the girl for $50 off eBay. New, but cheap because the box was damaged. Pfft. Idiots.

Girded up and ready to go

I've had this pine sitting on my back porch for weeks. As you all know, pine is the hardest wood known to mankind and an excellent test for this dainty knife. It was still a little green, but hey, the BK3 didn't care.

Because of the shape, or my poor technique, the BK3 tends to curve in as it bites. I was using a leuku style hold on the knife when chopping. You know, because you care about that sort of thing.

Instead, the BK3 does a much better job of just smashing the stick to shit. Sort of a chop/break combo. I liked it.

A chop into the supporting log revealed what I think you people call fatwood. I'll have to get at it later.

Looking good, it was time for some gloves and glasses... plus I had simply forgot about them earlier.

A thick terra cotta pot on the side of my house that was there when we moved in was giving me shit, so I took care of it.
IMG_3764.jpg

Same part of the pot, taken care of using the spine.

We have central air. I thought the installers had taken away this old AC.

I gave it a good whack at the corner. Not a bad little start. Good to know it would be easy to finish the job in case my family was trapped inside of it. Sorry for the crap shot of this.
IMG_3767.jpg

All right, so I got a little nervous about going further, so I just used the BK3 to pry up some vents and see how it did as a pry bar. It did fine.
IMG_3768.jpg

Some thick, well weathered plywood seemed like a better, more urban challenge for the knife.
IMG_3770.jpg

It turned out to not be much of a challenge at all.

Oiled up and looking good., but not too good. I don't want to spoil her. All ready for me to send in to Toooj for a warranty claim that the black coating is wearing off.

Thanks for looking!

Okay I totally was laughing out loud. :D:D:D

Excellent post, glad you didn't take no shit from that backsassing flower pot.

To be honest, the 3 was off my radar, 'till now.

Looks like a wrecking machine. nice.

Cool, and thanks for the pics. I'm surprised that some suck hole didn't send it back to the factory because of the box dings, before selling it. Good deal for you.

OMG that was awesome. What a steal! That AC unit didn't know who it was dealing with just loitering like that. I'm torn between the bk2 or bk3 as my first becker. They seem like completely different animals. How would you compare them? And thanks for the laughs!

There was one guy a while back who bought a BK3 as his first Becker and was pretty disappointed with it. I don't think it is the best first Becker, but that is not to say that it isn't an awesome knife. It is as thick as a BK2, as long as the 7 and can really take a beating. It is a good SHTF car knife, I think. Although, many guys here like it as a woods knife. It is a better prybar than the 7. As you can see, it isn't subtle or a good slicer. It is meant to beat the living hell out of things, cut through walls and take doors off of hinges.

I think for someone who hasn't really gotten a good taste for Becker knives would find the BK3 a little... I don't know. Obtuse. When you are introducing someone to fine cheese, you don't start them off with the stinky stuff, and that BK3 is some stinky cheese!

Cool pictures!
From what I hear, some more intense BK3 usage pics/videos may be hitting the Becker forum soon.

Good post, good post indeed.

I like the 3, its, its, well, its a BK3, you gotta know what you are getting when you get it, but, this weekends project will be a real eye opener. Mouth opener as well.

Good post and great looking knive.

Thanks for the advice sqoon. The cheese analogy put it in perfect perspective. I've always liked tools with multiple functions and purposes, and the 3 seems to fit that role but somehow, in a more specific niche. I think eventually I'll own one, but for general purposes, the 2 seems perfect. Plus, there's always room for a crowbar or tire iron in the trunk. Thanks again for the informative and fun post.

my bk3 is quite beat up. first, Toooj beat it up, then i bought it, and it's a cry baby living in the specops sheath cuz the factory one is broken. that coating is scuffed from batoning from maple and oak. prying stuff. smashing sheetrock, and plaster, and lathe. stuff. my hardest user! the Stanley fubar is a tough customer too! maybe tougher, but it's three feet long.

You should see if Toooj will hook you up with an replacement sheath.:D:foot::D

Great post, made me laugh hard. I will own one of these as well someday. If for no other reason- because it is 1/4" thick ! I was thinking of changing the blade from the serrations forward & putting a grind on the flat side also, so it chops better & slices better---would this be a cardnal sin ??? Thoughts please.

just destorying stuff for fun..........EXCELLENT

Maybe one of us should get a BK3 for the May Campout? ;)

Hey sqoon, thanks for taking the time to share those photos with us. Using a knife for what it was made for, Good Job!!!
