I was really expecting a bunch of junk and there was plenty but I asked him to pull all the Bucks out of the stacked pile of knives. And what do you know a real diamond among the rocks. Factory edge, Rosewood, no scratches on the blade and the sheath looks unworn. I couldn't be more pleased esp. since the Akonua was on my wish list. Note the price tag.

Flat, Do you want to know about it? That model was made from 1981-85 in that configuration (no yr. mark) and the blade is 425, a good steel. There were two styles of guards made is 81 "?" Could have been only one then changed in 82. But the pointed guard was on the early ones and then used up when the rose wood handles began production. The guard was then changed to the square tipped type, like on yours. However, if you found that same knife exactly like yours, except w/ a pointed guard I'd be UPSET. For those are rare! Just kidding. For that knife in that shape under $100 is within reason. If in the box certainly $100. If the guard were pointed--more. That model is my favorite Buck sheath knife. Good find! DM

DM,,,do you have any pics showing the differences in the two guards you are talking about?

FL, that's a nice Akonua... I'll have to find one someday... I did find a unfinished one at the swap meet it was just the blade, but I gave it to Leroy...

Pack, Mine is much earlier and it does have the pointed guard. I'll see what I can do.DM

Hey Thanks DM. I did want to know more on this knife. I looked in Blade's Knife Values book I have and it only talked about 60's fixed blades and earlier. I did find out that the Bucks used a lot of lignum vitae in their 50s knives. I happen to have some nice looking scale in the wood. A future project.

Thanks for the info DM. Could be more pleased.

Yesterday's good fortune inspired me to hit a couple of more local pawn shops...nothing but Paki/Chiny stuff.

That was a very good deal
You bet Hawkeye...hard to beat a mint $40 Akonua.

I found one yesterday also. Not as cheap as yours. They jack the price on Bucks when i walk in.

My friend is giving me a block of lignum vitae that he bought for knife scales back in the early 70's and never used it. I need to find a proper knife to which to apply/affix them.

Nope, neaver did see one of them before......Is that a LE???

It was regular production,i'm not sure when.Mid to Late 70's maybe? The engraving was aftermarket.(i think)I got a nice Parker skinner with it that had similar engraving.

Pack Rat, Piglips posted one w/ the early pointed guard.
Piglips, Yes, I'd say the engraving is not Buck's.Without seeing the sheath or box, I'd say you have an early one. Probably 1972-81, the blade is 440C w/ micarta handle. Thats a real find. They do me the same way in my pawn shops. Flat, we can't dare walk in and ask to see all your Buck's.DM

The Kalinga and Akonua was top of the line Buck models from the early 1970's to well into the 80's not including the custom shop. So, you guys are posting some real Buck history here. DM
