Dry ice add toughness?

Is it true that doing a dry ice slurry after quench increasing toughness in particular steels? I’ve been doing a lot of research and from what I gather it does, but some reason I feel it makes the steel harder which I though decreases toughness.

Reason I ask is that I just tested a drop point flat ground in S35VN without a cryo (DI slurry) and I noticed the edge had tiny chips from wacking at an aluminum can straight down at the top. I need to test with one with a DI slurry but would doing so (DI slurry) increase or decrease the likelihood of chipping? I’ve been doing the slurry on all my S35VN but have yet to test this torture..

Austenite is tougher than martensite ! When hardened austenite transforms to martensite but never 100 % . Depending on alloy and HT variables like Sub-zero treatment you can form various amounts of retained austenite [ RA ] .Match the needs for the application and you can get the most appropriate toughness. Yes some applications want more RA .
