DRY ICE FOR CRYO

You can do a subzero quench with dry ice, but you can only do cryogenic with LN.
I can buy dry ice at my local grocery store.

None of my local grocery stores sell it but there are more specialty supply companies that have it. After getting a dewar liquid nitrogen is more convenient.

Check the local welding gas suppliers. In my area, they sell dry ice. Only two sell LN though. Once you get set up for LN, it’s much more convenient. A 20l dewar lasts 5 months between fills. There’s the up font cost of the dewar though.

Just type "dry ice near (your zip code)" in your browser and you will be surprised to find that many stores you shop at have it.
I used to think I had to go downtown to the dry ice/CO2 supplier until I found out that there are six places within a five mile circle that carry it. It comes in little plastic wrapped slabs that are between 5 pound and 2 pounds ( depending on the amount of sublimation). It is in innocuous square white freezer boxes up by the checkout most of the time. Cost is very low - $1 a pound. Heck, Harris Teeter will deliver it to me for free, so I could get some beer, chips, steaks for dinner, and dry ice without having to run out during a HT.

I also get my DI at a local welding supply shop. I did a search for dry ice in my area and it listed atleast five grocery stores none of which ever carried it.

That was my experience too.

For grocery stores sometimes it's a time of year thing. They tend to carry it in the summer. Since it is a refined Co2 product its gotta come through a place that makes them so welding supply stores are a good place to try. Medical grade O2 also comes through those types of places. Praxair and Airgas are the 2 big chains that I know that actually make the gas. I bet if you asked at a good sporting goods (hunting/fishing) store they might know who stocks it in your area.

I got lucky. Our nearby HEB grocery stores carry dry ice. For any north San Antonio area makers, HEB at 281/Evans, the one just south of 1604 on Bulverde road, and the one at 1604 and Blanco.
