hey guys so i just recently got my kme and i was wondering what if anything do you guys use on the stones? i hear a lot of people talking about splashing water on diamond stones but was just curious if any one choice is better then others?

I've done dry, water, Windex and oil. I personally decided to stick with oil. It's messier but I feel like it provides better protection for the stones. I do this with my bench or KME diamonds.

What oil do you use? I have a small bottle of smith's honing oil and it's almsot empty so needless to say in deff on the market for a new one

I did honing oil for many, many years but I've fully transitioned over to plain ole food grade mineral oil. Once I ran out of honing oil I just didn't buy more. Even back a couple years ago I was still advocating honing oil but like I said, I eventually just went with food grade.

Honing oil is just highly refined mineral oil. The food grade stuff is a little thicker but no biggy. And you can find it in the pharmacy section of your local grocery store.

But, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using honing oil at all if that's what you want to use.

one last quick question with diamond stones does it make it easier to clean with mineral oil? like just wipe down with a rag or should i still run it under water and use a little dish soap to clean them?

I use oil (mineral oil) on my diamond hones for any significant grinding jobs. I started doing that mainly just because any water-based lubrication like plain water, or dish soap & water, always dried up too fast in the arid climate where I live (desert southwest of USA). I've since discovered the oil also does a better job in suspending the swarf, so it can easily be wiped away periodically. The drying effect of the local climate is also made more severe on my hands if using something like dish soap & water, or Windex, etc, on the hones. This is yet another reason why I prefer using the oil.

For very light touchups here & there, I'll still sometimes just use the hone dry and then wipe it down with a microfiber towel and some Windex afterward. When used with the oil, a dish soap & water bath with an old toothbrush for light scrubbing always cleans everything up nicely when I'm done.

I got to oil from my KME use. I started trying it because the water and Windex would just basically drip off (spray it on and then immediately turn the stone over and start working) and dry up so quick that I didn't think it was very effective. Then it just carried over to the bench stones.

I use copious amounts of water. I never allow the diamonds to start drying out.

Water is ideal on the Edge-Pro and not as messy as oil or simple green.

Hi,
on my harbor freight diamonds,
I use a few drops of baby oil on a q-tip,
and rub whole surface until it gets a light sheen,
its not enough oil to drip , esp at 20dps

wipe blade on rag, no mess at all

Any oil puddles on the stone end up transferring to the blade
or running off the edges of stone
