Hi all,

I travel quite a bit where road navigation/direction is needed (Asia, US, Canada, India, Australia, more coming. Sigh - the things we do for a living...). Recently I've been thinking about getting a handheld GPS which gives me driving directions, and can be loaded with additional maps (of other countries, cities, etc.). ADDITIONALLY, and here's the rub: I want to be able to use it when I'm boating or in the wild. I know I'm probably asking too much for a handheld GPS - maybe the truth is out there somewhere amongst the well informed forumers here. Also, any recommendations on which online shop to buy it from will be appreciated. Thanks.

Earlier this spring I purchased a Garmin GPS60CSx from GPSNOW.com, a division of 4x4Books.com. The GPS60CSx is capable of turn-by-turn directions to a destination, although I have net yet employed that feature. I have used mine in conjunction with a map for road trips, to get better views of upcoming interchanges, etc., and have done some geocaching. I was amazed at how well it worked in the woods! In full tree cover, I still had accuracy between 17-20 feet, which was fine for us.

The GPS60CSx uses a removable and upgradable MicroSD card in addition to its 64mb internal memory. I have 512mb and 1gb cards for my unit, and store topo info on one and street info on the other. The unit is awesome, and I have no regrets, other than I don't get to use it too often.
