Dual Surival Question

After watching all of the episodes (some more than once) I am beginning to question several aspects of the show. The main one is Daves capture of large proteins. Does anyone else find it at least a little curious that Dave sets some traps and 20 minutes later has a 40 pound hog "trapped"? And in the La. swampa he walks up on a large gator in 6" of water with no deep water for it to get in.

Most of us know Dave is the man when it comes to hunting.....but I am beginning to think some of these animals are plants (they are still dead and food though). I just think it is a little odd that he gets so "lucky" in each episode.

Could be.

But also remember that there's untold hours of footage on the cutting room floor to cut these shows down to 40 minutes (have to leave time for commercials), so a lot of what they do isn't shown.

Now, living in a swamp myself, basically any place there is a sizable (Iin area, not depth) amount of water, there will be a gator or croc there (just IMO, but what he caught looked a lot more like a freshwater croc than a gator). There's also large areas covered in water, but the water may only be a foot or so deep, like where he was.

BTW, he was dead on about moccasins -- they're no joke, and they come out of their mother pissed off.

Just out of curiosity, are you a Dragonlance fan?

they are all plants, same with survivor man and man vs wild, its a tv show and I'm sure things get rehearsed first.

Hard to argue that any "reality" show is ever real anymore. Empty traps = lower ratings. Still better than eating from a zebra carcass and drinking from elephant dung. Enjoy the show for what it is, entertainment.

That kind of environment gators are EVERYWHERE. Now am I saying that is wasn't staged- I have no idea. I can tell you as someone who used to help trap gators in fl for DNR that messing around with one with nothing more than a stick even that size is a great way to get hurt. What he did was dangerous and no amount of "staging" takes that away.

In the disclaimer it states that certain situations are presented to allow them to show viewers what to do in an actual survival situation.

Why do people not understand that it's a TV program

As Kurrupted said, certain situations are presented to them.. for the sake of entertainment.. To watch actual footage of a real survival actually surviving expert in real time.. would be pretty boring to anyone other than the forumites here..LOL

Very true, the real thing in real time would not hold our attention either.

I have a video on my channel about carving a net needle. It's about 5 min long IIRC. I do recall that I had about 30 minutes of footage shot for that video. Nobody would ever sit through the entire process so I only showed each of the different cuts and then edited off all the carving until I switched to a different cut.

You can edit footage with integrity or you can edit to fake the process or import results from off camera activity (something I haven't seen). Seriously they very well could have filmed a section in one location and continued the story somewhere else. Who's to say that they follow along on a straight walk out of the bush from one location to the next? What does it matter as long as the final result shows the techniques with integrity?

I think their opening disclaimer is good enough, some of these techniques are being set up so they can be demonstrated. As long as they are demonstrated according to reality that's good enough. It's a TV show. Mac

I understand that it is a tv show. However, if it is staged then Cody's outrage was faked. I also live in a swap. and while I know there are gators everywhere, I also know that the bigger gators tend to like deeper water. The one Dave found was 6' or so and in a few inches of water...when it had the option of much deeper water near by.
As for the moccasins...those a nasty snakes. They will actually CHASE you for a good distance. I cannot count how many of those things we killed growing up.

Also, isn't illegal to kill a Gator without a permit? Another reason I think it was staged.

I still like the show for what it is.... far better than Bear Grylls.

I could actually see a show producer not letting Cody know that it would be a gator staged just that he would go hunting and find something.

If he did know Cody may have disagreed with it from the outset or just used his reaction to make a point to the audience that this is a bad idea for the vast majority of people to try. (I would agree with him)

Either way I don't see that as being dishonest.

I question this myself. Like I said in an earlier post I worked with a nuisance gator trapper in Fl. for a while and I can tell you that it is VERY restricted as to who can touch a gator with jail time a real possibility for a violation. I have no ideas what the laws are in La though.
