Duct tape or gaffer's tape?

Which tape do you use most often for quick-and-dirty repairs? I've heard gaffer's leaves less sticky residue but is much more expensive.

Also, do you use "duct" tape, "Duck" tape, or whatever's on sale?

The better grades of gaffer's/ rigger's tape, or the military "100mph tape", have a lot more fabric content than the average duct tape, as well as better adhesive. They cost more, but on anything significant it's usually worth using the better stuff.

Gotta agree with the Dance man. 100mph tape works wonders. I think with a roll of that and a spool of bailing wire, most men can build a small house. :p

Does anyone know where I can buy the Real Military issue OD Green 100MPH duck tapes which can be peeled back and used again & again without adhesive left stuck on surfaces?

I dont mean those stuff that Brigade Quartermasters sell.

Any help you all can give?

Warmest wishes,

Oliver

I was in the HVAC business in a past life [heat/vent/air conditioning] as known in the trades. I naturally went to the HVAC local dealer for duct tape. Not to be a smart arse but the stuff is originally designed to seal heating and cooling ducts [permanently] i.e. "duct tape" Find the old guy at the dealer and tell him you want the good duct tape, not the $3.95 stuff in the bin out front. They may need to order it for you. Probably will cost $10.00 to $15.00 per roll but you can stick your boat or darn near anything back together with the stuff. You can tear it and split it in 1/2 inch strips if you want. All cloth, not plastic and backed by glue that will take your hide off. I carry it a lot and really use it a little. But I wouldn't carry the junk for the difference in price. Just go to the phone book under furnace or air conditioner dealers.:D

Gaff tape is good stuff provided you buy a quality brand like Permacell. It doesn't leave much residue, but will fail miserably when wet! so keep that in mind.

Is it really called "100 MPH" duct tape? If so, why?

It was used to patch bullet holes on airplanes, and wouldn't come off even at 100mph. -that's the story I heard anyway.

Sounds good enough to me.

So what tape will not fail when wet?

I seen alot of gunships with their skins perforated by ak bullets patched with the old 100 mph tape back durning my "Asian Vacation" in the '60's. The new stuff we get here at Ft.Knox wouldn't hold on a Ugo.
The U.S cav store (www.uscav.com)still has some of the kind heavy in fabric.

This stuff has more legends associated with it than the terms "GI", and P-38, both of which are subject to debate.

When I was in Okinawa, we called it Typhoon Tape, we used it to secure windows, etc., during the typhoons. Well, actually, we did it before the typhoons landed.

I wonder how many other names it has...

Well I like duct tape too :D about a year ago, I posted a thread tellin my story. (short version) I was going to Lincoln Nebraska to see the Misfits, picked up a flat along the way, patched the hole with duct tape, and it held along the way back home going 70mph on the innerstate.

First, congratulations. Second, may I ask what kind or brand of duct tape you used? There are several different ones available.

What do you guys think is the best tape for getting a good grip on something? I just picked up a new tomahawk and want to wrap it with some kind of tape. Is gaffer's tape the thing to go with, since it has a higher fabric content? I don't like the thought of it coming undone when wet, however. I want something black in color. Thanks.

I'd wrap it with paracord, myself. The shiny side of the tape may get slippery when wet. Very dangerous.
