While doing an inventory/clean out of decades of accumulated items in the basement, I found a nice Solingen hunting knife of the type made from forged carbon steel in a very plain but good looking bowie flat grind style.

This is the type of knife you would expect to see for sale in the 1950's through 1970's that usually had blades around 5-6" long with a convex back to the blade. The clip was nicely ground to a dull vertex along the scoop.

The sheath for this knife disappeared long ago, but I took a liking to it and as I wanted to keep busy this weekend, I decided to re-profile the tip, as the tip was snapped off probably about 1" back from the tip some time ago by the previous user, who I suspect was my brother.

On the blade near the guard it sayd Solingen and ot the other side it says: Hoppe

The knife has a rat - tail tang, the handle material is made up of what I suspect are stacked leather discs, which are very dried out and loose.

I am in the midst of giving the knife a bath in arctic dubbin in an attempt to swell up the discs, seems like I have met with some success, about 1/2 o the handle closest to the guard is very tight, the lower half near the pommel, is still loose.

The pommel appears to be some sort of high quality die casting or maybe cast aluminum with a counterbore for a brass nut that has the usual slot which the threaded tang tightens on to.

And as usual, the end of the tang is peened over quite a bit.

Just had a 'duh' moment, if I get a pair of needle nose pliers I should be able to tighten up the pommel.

sound of footsteps running to the basement.

for me there were no pictures showing, just a red x in the first link and a blank box in the next.

I see the pictures, I don't know what to do with the handle but the links are working for me.

I guess you just sand it down until you are happy. soaking the handle in mink oil only did so much - had to add an extra leather washer from an old belt.

Maybe if I sand the handle down to get it nice it will suck up more mink oil, it's not much to look at but meh, the handle is now secure at least. . .
