Dui Chirra VS M43

So I have an 18.5" Dui Chirra by Thamar as my main 'use' Khukuri. I've not been able to put it to as much use as I've wanted yet but so far the edge has held up well and it is a decent chopper. I believe its needs to be sharpened a little bit more to bring out its full cutting power.

That said I keep hearing lots of good things about the M43s and have been seeing them popping up on the DOTD threads. From the basic specs it looks like they are typically pretty close in length and weight to my Thamar DC, but the blade and handle shape are quite a bit different. So it has me wondering if it would be worth buying an M43 to use over my DC. Anyone own and use both these blades to attest to a difference in chopping power and usability between them?

I have both. Both are beautiful functioning blades. To me, the beauty goes to the Dui Chirra, but the sleek looks of the M-43 is in a class all of its on.

For absolute function and use, I'll always pick the M-43. I prefer the 15", as it's easier to pack. I also prefer the palm swell and exaggerated pommel. The non-ring handle is non traditional, and therefore not as desirable by some. Yet, for heavy usage, I find the palm swell on the M-43 more comfortable. I've received a few blisters from the traditional Khukri ring grips.

The M-43 became my favorite HI, the moment I first started chopping with one. Don't think you'll likely have one slip from your hand either. Between the the palm swell and the oversized pommel, it just isn't likely. I currently have 3 HI M-43 Khukris. Of all my HI blades, these are my favorites.

I also have both. If you are going for another kukri, the M43 is a good one. This would fit in well where heavier chopping is needed. I would try for one on the lighter side and less than 18 inches to help keep the weight down. I have a 15 inch M43 that I love. It packs a punch, but doesn't become too fatiguing. That being said I am going to pick up a 17 inch M43 soon...

Thanks for the input. Seems to fit with everything I've read so far that everyone who has an M43 loves them.

I love my Thamar DC as well and IMO its an absolute work of art. I don't have any complaint other than its not as sharp out of the box as I believe it needs to be for some heavy chopping. Seems like Thamar leaves his blades a little on the duller side, but that's nothing that can't be fixed.

That being said I am going to pick up a 17 inch M43 soon...

Uh-oh, I wonder if we aren't looking at the same one? It's been bothering me that the neem M43 by Lachi from the 9/15 DOTD doesn't have a home yet. I've been fighting the temptation for almost a week now, but if someone doesn't pick it up soon I'm going to have to.

That M43 may no longer be available, they usually don't last long, but if your interested, email auntie, that is the only way to find out for sure whether it is available or stealth sharked.

BTW, I have a M43 too, and it's my go to blade for heavy work in the yard. I have several DC's, TC's, and such. They are beautiful with their fullers. I personally find that I am less fatigued with the M43, it seems to do more work, with its own weight, I seem to exert more force personally with the DC, and TC. Not much more mind you, but I just feel that the M43 works a tad bit harder, so that I don't have to. The M43 is also a beauty in itself, dare I say it, I truly find the M43 aesthetically pleasing to admire.

I have both, though I only just received the Dui Chirra.
I have extensive experience with the M43, both the original style and the new style. The M43 has a much more neutral balance which makes it seem to weigh less in use.
The Dui Chirra while weighing less than either of my M43's feels more front heavy, and it's balance point is a good bit further out on the blade. This is good news when it comes to chopping, but makes it a bit less nimble in the hand than the M43.
Personally I try to keep my M43's to 18" and 24-28 ounces.
If I were to get rid of all my other knives, the M43 by Bura is the one I'd keep.

Nice of you to visit wildmike, been too long.

dvm1985, you can take this mans word to the bank and draw interest. If anybody has gotten intimate with an M43 it's this guy.

They don't call him wildmike cause he works in the city if you follow the flow of my river.

DVM be warned, M43's are major carriers of HIKV.

Truly unbelievably versatile blades.

Bawanna thanks for the kind words. I'm just another one of Uncle Sams Misguided Children who spent to much time outdoors.
