I spoke with Larry Dula, Lenoir N.C. concerning the custom knife I purchased. He says the steel is a "high carbon" steel that is referred to as "1011". He purchases it from a West Virginia Knife maker named "Wilson". Dula says the steel is a quite good steel that he hardens 58 Rockwell and it holds an edge very well. People usually skin about 4 deer before sharpening a knife made of "1011". He assures me that it is a high carbon steel. He says the steel is used in "Spark Plug" manufacturing (but I wouldn't think a high carbon steel would be used in that application??). Hopefully there is some type of steel designation that is un-usual being used in this instance. As it trully would be a shame for someone to waste the time, effort, and money to make a knife this nice from trash steel. He has no address or info. on Wilson the West Virginia knife maker. He thought Wilson may work as a some type of steel salesman when not making knives. Any input or comments would be appreciated. Still looking for info on "1011" steel.

It leads to believe it is of the 10XX series with approx. 0.1% carbon content. Quite low in carbon. Test it for edge retension.

mes228,
I left you some contact info in your thread in the Custom Knife Forum.

I'd like to make a wild guess here. I think the maker is mis informed about the type of steel....In fact it could be a lot of things I think.

I'm guessing what he is calling 1011 is really ASTM 1011.

ASTM A1011- Covers hot-rolled structural, high-strength low-alloy, and high-strength low-alloy with improved formability steel sheet and strip, in coils and cut lengths

That covers a lot of territory!
