Okay, I know that this one is pretty far out there and I don't know that you could even consider it a gadget or gear, however, since the combined experience of this forum always impresses, I thought I would ask...

Can any of you recommend an outfit that makes a nice dulcuimer in the sub 200 dollar range? I'm purchasing it for a beginner who may or may not stick with it.

Thanks!

Try asking around at the local Ren Faires. That's how I found a dulcimer player to play at my wedding.

It's going to be a long Winter, have you thought about making your own from a kit or searching Ebay, Craigs List etc.

I have but the thing I've discovered is that in the low end of the spectrum the kits cost nearly as much as the finished product.

Thanks for the responses so far guys! I never know who is going to stop in here and know about whatever crazy thing I ask about.

Are you looking for a Hammered Dulcimer or an Appalachian Dulcimer? There are lots of links on the Net if you Google either one. In that price range, most companies will have about the same quality.

I was looking at an Appalachian (or Mountain I guess they are called.) Yes, I did the usual google search, but was more interested in folks that had good experiences with a particular company since I have no idea if any one outfit in this area is particularly good or a rip off artist.
