My dad gave me a very dull Buck 102.

I tried sharpening with a stone, diamond, and even an Chef's choice electric sharpener. I cant get an edge on this thing.

I am no expert, but I can get an edge on my others.

Any Ideas?

Welcome to the forum. If your father gave it to you, and was one here has owned for a while there is a chance that it is made using 440C steel not the 420HC that is used today. The 440C steel will be a little harder to sharpen, but it will hold its edge just a little bit longer. Can you see on the edge if it looks thick? You may just need to work it down some. The older Buck knives came with a thicker edge than they do now. How is the tang stamp marked? Does it have a symbol beside the 102?

It was not his, it came in the garage of a cottage he bought. The blade looks rough, like someone really used it, and the top front has been attempted to be sharpened.

I dont recall seeing anything but Buck 102 near the bottom of the blade. It seems really hard though, usually the grinder on the electric chef's choice helps but no go here. Half tempted to take my angle grinder to it.

I just want to get is sharp enough use.

I will get them, but it will be awhile, I am on my way out of town will try to get them sunday sometime.

Send the knife back to Buck and let them work their magic. See the Buck Knives Sharpening Service section on their web site. I've done this with a number of Buck knives and they always came back with a ridiculously great edge and were buffed up to look darn near new.

The 102 is a small knife with a thick, clunky blade.

It takes a little more effort and time to get a good edge on it. If it's gotten really dull, you have to take it back some at a low angle and that takes a while.

If you use a diamond type stone and a little patience, you can get a nice edge back on it.

But it does not happen in a few minutes if the knife has been abused.

I still say just send it back to Buck and let them do their thing. Life's too short! :)

What does it cost? About $12 total???

I suppose I could afford that once in a while, especially if they polish up the whole knife.

Indeed. I wouldn't send the knife to Buck just for average, normal sharpening. But for a knife that's a bit beat up and has a really dulled edge, it's a great way to go. Think of it as a tune-up for a car you love.
