Dull Benchmade?

I have not bought a new Benchmade for a while and saw a Mini-Griptilian in person last week so I ordered one. Love the look and feel of it out of the box, but this thing is as dull as a butter knife. I have a new Kershaw Groove that was scary sharp out of the box, and sad to say my new CRKT Ignitor was sharper out of the box than this thing.

Granted it won't stay that way long, but I was a little shocked at the edge. Anyone else ever have one new out of the box come this way?

my 940 osborne came with a very dull and uneven edge. One side was maybe 40 degrees while the other was in the ballpark of 55 degrees. It took me about a week on a sharpmaker to make the thing passably sharp and it of course now has a very wide/large bevel on the side that used to be thicker. I was a bit dissapointed to say the least. The upside is that it is now undeniably a user considering the level of sharpening marks it has. I have no qualms over abusing it.

My BM 556BK was the same. After a couple of weeks sharpening it, it is a little better. I am going to send it to a pro to get it sharpen as I like my knives sharp.

All of my benchmades have been sharp enough to split molecules. I'm pretty sure dull BMs are an anomaly. Too bad, but at least you can feel good about about using them now.

The dullest knife I ever received was a BM 760, edge was about 40 deg per side and had a burr big enough you could scrape with it.

Just send it back to benchmade with a note and return shipping. I have had never had one that wouldn't split hairs.

Today! Got my 530BK, One of the dullest knives I've ever purchased. It's really sharp now though. Really digging this knife too, and since I had my gear out, every knife in the kitchen is a razor again.

While we're on the subject of mini-Griptilians, I just reprofiled my D2 mini-Grip and honed it to a really great edge. Kind of a toss-up for EDC props now.

So your blade had a 95 degree edge bevel? That's more than one of the edges of the spine. While I don't doubt it's obtuse I do find that a stretch.

Both my grip and mini-griptilian came razor sharp. My 530 comes tomorrow so we'll see how sharp she is.

Out of about 7 or 8 Benchmade's I have purchased only my most recent was dull, it also had goofy angles on both sides, a few minutes on the diamond stones and she was fixed right up

551 Grip I got about a year ago was moderately sharp, couldn't shave though.
940 I got a few weeks ago couldn't really cut much of anything - left jagged edge when cutting printer paper :(

Not impressed with the edges for either of them considering the money spent...

Haven't had a single issue with any of my Benchmade's......I did have an issue with resharpening my first 551, ended up just buying another knife and giving the dull one to a friend. :D

You want my address for when this one gets dull?

Buck and Kershaw spoil you with hair splitters. Of my 11 Benchmades, the first two were dull out of the box. A number of years later, this past spring, I tried another one - wow! A few more, some older stock, followed - with a mixed result - old or new, some were just embarassingly dull - it's literally just crappy QC. Super knives, I 'touched up' several with my Spyderco Sharpmaker - sometimes I thought I had a new career. I put up with it because the knives really are nice... and you can re-edge them - eventually. A trip home may be required for some.

My benchmite II came quite dull. It couldn't cut paper. I'll see how the 550HG compares when it gets here.

seems to be a common problem as of late. The last BM I bought was very dull. Havent bought another since.

The only BM's I've ever had come satifactorily sharp were my black box auto's and an origional 710 D2 variant.

my 943, 551ORG, 551BKD2, & 530 were all as dull as brick NIB, the worst was my 551ORG with a 20+ bevel on one side and a 10-12 on the other, took quite awhile to even that one out.

Never have gotten a new Benchmade that was dull.

I have gotten secondary market Benchmade knives with folded edges and such. Looked like the previous owners, who invariably claim the knives came that way, had tried to cut steel pipe of some such.

My brand new mini Skirmish wouldn't even cut paper and the edge was very rough.
I'm still trying to get it right on the Sharpmaken but i need the diamond stones because the angle is totally wrong right now.

I'm sorry. What I meant was that one side was about 20 degrees and the other seemed to be around 25-27 degrees. You are correct in saying that bevels like that would be closer to a spine than the edge. For some reason I always confuse inclusive edge with actual edge angle. I tend to think of 15 degree edges as 30 degrees and so forth, assuming that the other side is the same angle.
