I been thinking about modifying a Cold steel Latin Machete 18" inch blade ( 23" total lenght) as a cheap training tool for Escrima.
i want to remove the edge and black coating. Has anyone any experience with the use of a trainig machete in escrima?

Any tips?
Thx

I just want to warn that even dull thing with enough momentum can cut (off). What counts is surface contact and kinetic power.
(Lawn mowers are good exapmles of this effect.)

True enough! We use the Ontario 12" machetes as trainers (with dulled, rounded edges. They work well for training Bowie and FMA. I have been hit on bare hands and yeah... it wouldn't take much to break a finger (or worse). Still, in isolated sparring and drills they are great.

I agree... use caution. But use none the less.

You could dull them, and then put some foam or rubber strips over the dulled edge.

I use the Cold Steel Kukri Machete for training. It has a 13" blade (18" overall). I just dulled the blade and away I went. But believe me, it will still cut you.

Be careful with live weapons.

I've done this.........the problem is little chips of the blade flying everywhere. Make sure you wear eye protection.

I've also had one of their blades snap off at the handle.......luckily no one injured.

I've been using Martindale made machetes........since then

I was messing around with a machete not too long ago... I accidentally swung the back end of it into my noggin... I had to go get stitches in my head...

And that was the back end... No edge...
So a dulled machete will be a hazard.

Dont you know in Africa, most rebel soldiers have machetes, and they’re pretty blunt.. Its basically a sheet of metal... And still they can chop off your arm...

Ive been using a dulled machete for a while; I have a couple and only cost me $12 each. When you grind the edge to dull it make sure you also round the corners and round the tip of the blade. It gives a realistic weight and feel compared to most aluminum trainers that cost too much. Bear in mind though that the impact of a dull machete can still inflict serious damage as have mentioned on the previous posts :D
Have fun and stay safe.

What if you ground it down and then coated the grounded are and tip with this:

Plasti-Dip-Aerosol Or Liquid Air Dry Synthetic Rubber Coating
Dip-It-Yourself compound-make your own plastic grips for your tools. This coats metal, wood, glass, rubber, foam, and plastics. It does not chip or peel. It is an excellent application for tools because it gives more gripping power, insulates and serves to identify ownership. It can be used to coat ends of rope and to prevent breakage of glass bottles and containers. It also prevents corrosion of chains, locks and metal parts. Plasti-Dip is an industrial grade, high solids material formulated to provide a permanent, smooth, thick coating. It is flammable, similar in appearance to flexible vinyl, and is resistant to abrasion, cutting, and marring. Just dip the item to be coated in Plasti-Dip and let dry in the air-no heat required. 1 gallon will coat 40 sft. at 10 mil thick. Not UV resistant. UV formula available by special order; contact us for quote. Item can not ship via Air freight of any kind. 5 Gallon size will have a $20.00 per each hazmat charge to be shipped UPS.

If you really wanted to be "creative" you could get the red and pattern it like blood splatter. Either way I really like the idea of grinding down the machete. I thought it would be even neater if you could make life sized replicas of the weapons on the "Weapons of Moroland" shield to train with, I mean yeah chances are I will never be able to carry one or use on but it could be something different and fun train with once in a while.

Like these?

Yup I made them, they are based on live blades from the Philippines.
I'm working on a full sized "Weapons of Moroland" board for my training area as soon as I get some other examples to make trainers from.

I do the same, but have also gotten into the trainers offered at atienzakali.com
those are alluminum but great trainers to bang against each other. the dulled machettes some times would "stick" into each other...even if dulled.

either way.
good luck

Like others have said, I would be very careful of dulling live blades. Apart from anything, check those sneaky underlying laws that could get you into trouble if someone got hurt with it.

I've heard of a guy who had his bone and nerves crushed in his thumb, caused by an impact from a metal trainer.

If you are only using them yourself or against a dummy, I wouldnt worry, but against another person? Just be very, very careful
