Well, I had been lusting for one of these for about 6 years, so I finally pulled the trigger. DP was having a 10% off sale, so I bought the long version.

Short review:

This thing is bombproof. If you are an ounce counter RUN AWAY, this IS NOT LIGHT. It can make a shelter of its own in summer. I put a pair of surplus wool blankets in it and headed out for the cold Florida winter (heh). OK, it was 48. But, I did not use a pad (even though it has a slot for a pad in the back), I slept on one wool blanket, with the other over me, and the front panel of the bedroll zipped closed,. It was nice and toasty. I really like this thing, it's sized like a big rectangular sleeping bag, so those broad of shoulder like me have lots of room (40" wide). It has a neat zippered slot near the head where you can stuff a jacket, another blanket, or whatever to use as a pillow.

A classy piece of gear that really holds its own, especially for the traditional camper.

In my older years, I gotta have a good cot. If I get down on the ground, it would take the rest of my vacation to get up again.:D For you younger guys, enjoy your mobility while you have it. The day will come when it just ain't there anymore.

Thanks for the review, Cpl! I love Duluth packs, and have had my eye on the bedroll for a while now, but just never could justify the cost just to scratch my "trad camping" itch.

Cabelas sells what they call an Outfitter's Bedroll that is bigger (46"x96") and cheaper at $119.
Are they comparable or not?

i've been wanting a duluth bedroll for quite some time now. i read a review over at song of the paddle and thought "thats exactly what i need!".

glad you got one Cpl.

you should post some pics :)

I've had my eye on those for years too. Could you post a pic of your complete set-up?

Jeff

This one? Bed Roll Looks pretty solid.

Yep, that's the one.

I'll post pics when I can. We have cold front after cold front (meaning nearly constant rain) forecast for the next week. Not that this won't take it, but the pics come out too dark.

I balked at the price as well, but it's only been going up over the years, so I took advantage of their 10% off deal.

I have a Duluth Pack bedroll as well, and it is very rugged. Yes it is heavy, but in a tough situation it is a nice piece to have. So I put in a plug for it as well. Duluth pack also makes a lumbar pack that I use as a day hiker. Very handy and rugged as well.

That's one hell of a sturdy bedroll. It better get chilly before you carry and sleep in that!

My Junglebag weighs a little over 1.5 lbs :) Nevertheless, you still can't beat Duluth's stuff.

Regarding the weight of the bed roll. i think duluth equipment was originally designed to be used on canoe trips. i'm sure if they made a new light weight version using gortex or some other synthetic fabric not only would it way less but also keep out the weather.

However, i think thats beyond the point of duluth products, or other bits of traditional kit. the point is, people are willing to pack the weight for the luxury of having a piece of history with them. :)

I have the long version of the bedroll, I would say mine weighs around 5 pounds.

BUMP

Hey Cpl do you carry this attached to your pack or as a stand alone piece of gear? Any follow up thoughts after a almost a year of using it?

Thanks

The website says
# Available in two lengths:
Short 73”L x 40”W (approx 8"H x 15"W when rolled), Long 83”L x 40”W (approx 12"H x 15"W when rolled)
# Short Bedroll weighs: 7lbs
# Long Bedroll weighs: 9.4lbs
Astonished Cat is astonished! (Actually, Astonished Cat is freaking out at $200 for a canvas sack, but the weight is pretty astonishing too.)

Yeah, at 10 lbs, the long version of that is almost 1/3 of my total backpacking weight allowance.

But for canoe camping or car camping, I suspect it's nice and comfy.
