Dumb guy question: fobs

I got a couple small CRKT's for Father's Day. Both have approx. 1 1/2" fobs. What is the purpose of these things? As the grips are small, for me they seem to get in the way. I'd cut them off but, figured I'd better ask the guys who know before I do anything. I have a SPEW horizontal on my belt, carries great, but it has this "thing" hanging down. For me this is a weapon, not a tool. Cut it off or no? (My current EDC is a Boker MPT in my pocket.)

Thanks, Joe

I find fobs very annoying on my grips. Some fobs do help when you're trying to get the knife in hand.

I have a removable one which I use when I go camping (in case I drop it in the grass or something).
Otherwise I take it off as it gets in my way

If I where I might drop my knife through activity and it might be hard to recover if it fell, I use a lanyard which I differentiate from a fob. A lanyard is a line which I clip to my belt loop or any other part of my body.

Fob.

My knot is different but def the same func as the red one on the spyderco
I should try the belt clip ones you showed below

Yep, a lanyard is very useful in thick brush, over water, or anywhere that there's a chance of losing your knife if you drop it.

Given my history of losing knives, I don't carry anything without a lanyard. ;)
And bails work better on smaller knives than lanyard holes. How could you drill a lanyard hole in this, for instance? Or a Swiss Army Knife?

But if you don't need a bail and have no intention of tying a lanyard or fob to it, I don't see any problem with removing it.

I use fobs on tiny knives, like the minigrip, since the handle ends so early, there is nothing for my pinky to grip. With a fob, it just feels better to me.

I have a fob on every waved folder.

I use a small fob almost like a "pinky lanyard" on my small fixed blade knives. This allows me to just drop the knife and let it hang when my hands are needed.

Fobs can be used to extend your grip on a small knife, as described above. You can hold the knobby part of a fob between pinky & ring fingers to help maintain grip.

You can also stick knife into pocket with only fob exposed, until it is needed to be grabbed.

Fob can be used on a bigger knife too, as a pinky stop.

Ranger bands on an axe handle.

Lanyards for occasions where you really don't want to drop your tool.
