Dumb newbie question....

It's a knife that has been built out of left over parts of various production runs...'build out'. It might be like the blade from run of S30v 110 blades and left over micarta scales. Neither being of the original run.

Remember the only dumb question is the one that's not asked:thumbsup:

I'll give it a try. When Buck manufactures a special custom knife for a retailer there is often times an overrun in parts.
Buck uses up those remaining parts, "building out" the remaining inventory and offers the knives for sale on their website.
Often times these parts may result in a uniquely different knife depending on the assortment of parts available. A "Franken" knife if you will
It can be a very interesting collecting area in and of itself.

Preston types faster, there were no responses when I started typing.....

Caquino, if you look near the top of the forum page there is a list of recent build outs offered by Buck.
Buck generally documents this information for collectors.
You may have already noticed that Build Out model codes end in .....BO

Thanks!! I saw the build out list thread, could not figure out just what a "build out" represented.

How does Buck market them, listed under the Web Special section of their website?

Yes, I have seen them listed as Web Specials in the past but in recent times the Web Specials tend to be Close Outs more than Build Outs.
In the long distant past Buck would send a list to Buck Collectors Club members but have not seen that offering in years.
I suspect they may more commonly be sold thru the factory store in recent times, available to the lucky few who live close.
Makael (forum member here) would be able to confirm which method is most common as he lives close and frequents the store.

This is one of the best BO112's..S30V blade from a BCCI edition and Jigged Buffalo horn that I'm not sure what 112 came with. S30V 112's were rare and hard to find. This one sold out quickly and was a real bargain at $80.00 if I'm remembering correctly..20200307_155952.jpg

Here is another oddity I just got yesterday ... 424 with a 2013 blade and a build date in 2015. This model was discontinued about 1995 when they went to the 444.
So someone put this whole thing together.. maybe a remnant of a special order . Wasn't in the build out list that I could find. But here it is.

When I started collecting in 2007 BO's were fascinating to me. The fact that most of the runs were well under 100.was another plus. Some were extremely limited and NEVER showed up on Ebay or anywhere else I could find.
