Hi all,

I am new to this site and don't own any Busse knives yet. First off, your all nuts here, but your my kind of nuts. :D

I stumbled on here from Google when I was trying to locate a modern well made gladius type weapon for my post apocalypse aresenal and the Busse gladius turned up. It was exactly what I was looking for. I was astonished to see what a good knife costs. The most I ever spent for a knife was about $100 for benchmade folder I bought many years ago after reading Richard Marcinko's Rogue Warrior.

So I know I am going to regret finding this site because I always to buy the best made item I can reasonably afford for anything I may end relying to save a life. After researching here and reading a bit it seems this proprietary INFI metal is regarded as one of the best, so now I must have one (or two!!). The gladius is a definite buy once I find a good deal, I'm hoping the store will offer them. Anyway, I have a few questions:

1) What is the relationship between Busse, SwampRat, and Junk Yard knives if any?

2) Why is there so few models available directly from the company at any time?

3) Is the best way to buy waiting here for an announcement of a "gaanza" event and jumping on that? (Other than individuals, which it seems, there are many who have way too many knives on their hands I must say, lol. I hope I don't catch that bug!)

4) You all throw all these knive acronyms around for models and I can't find anything on them as far as specs. I would have thought the company would have a reference page with all the details for all models but I don't see it. I am also surprised that no Busse fanatic has put together a comprehensive list of all models with specs and such, but maybe they have and I haven't found it.

5) Do older models ever come up again for purchase from the company or can they ever be ordered from the custom shop?

I was looking at a gladius and sheath on eBay and my wife saw the asking price of $75 and asked why I would pay that much for a knife, I said I'm just looking and didn't tell her that was for just the sheath, lol.

A matching gladius and dagger combo with a Chubby Bear (sp?) custom piggyback leather sheath would be sweet, and I'd also like to get one of the larger knives, but I don't know what is really out there. I keep seeing pics in various threads where I think, that one there is the one I want! No wait, that one .. Lol.

It just seems there is a lot to know and I see your all a tight knit group which is great, but makes it hard for someone new to get in the mix.

Anyway, thanks for reading if you made it this far!

Tim

Welcome to the forum!

http://www.hogcult.com/
has a lot of previous models listed, sizes, pitures etc
you can look and see what you like, then go to the secondary market and see
if someone has one for sale.
you can also post a "wanted to buy" thread in the "wanted to buy" forum
(kinda makes sense dont it? ;) )

I will warn you
1 piece of Infi is never enough!

1) What is the relationship between Busse, SwampRat, and Junk Yard knives if any? They're sister companies. Dan Busse runs Scrap Yard, Jennifer is the figurehead of Swamp Rat, and of course, Jerry Busse is the main man. Though some steel bleed-over occurs (there are INFI Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard knives), traditionally Busses have been INFI, Swamp Rats have been SR-101, and Scrap Yards have been SR77.

2) Why is there so few models available directly from the company at any time? For all three companies, knives are made in batches or runs.

3) Is the best way to buy waiting here for an announcement of a "gaanza" event and jumping on that? (Other than individuals, which it seems, there are many who have way too many knives on their hands I must say, lol. I hope I don't catch that bug!) Yes... Ganzaaas, special offerings, offerings from the Company Store. For the Gladius, I'm thinking your best bet would be the upcoming Knob Creek show in October, either going in person or finding someone to proxy for you. Since the Gladius is pretty recent, I'd almost bet there'll be a few at KC.

Try bussecollector.com OR hogcult.com OR homepage.mac.com/zombiekiller/badmojo/index.html All three are good resources.

5) Do older models ever come up again for purchase from the company or can they ever be ordered from the custom shop? Occasionally, you'll see an old model revamped slightly for release by Busse. But most often the design changes as different iterations of a model come out. The Custom Shop is an option, but custom Busses are pricey ($100/inch as a rough estimate), and the wait is considerable.

See above.

Well, just so you know, they don't make the Integral Daggers or the Gladius anymore. And although you may find the Gladius on the exchange, the Integral Daggers is very hard to get. I still have not gotten my hands on one yet...
That's a great grail combo though. Way to start out with a first set of Busse. Now that's a goal!
Welcome to the addiction!

Second that, Dan, I refuse to believe you don't have a dagger tucked away somewhere

Welcome to Busse!

I think there's a good chance of seeing some Glaudius blades at Knob Creek.
What comes out at Blade is often seen at the subsequent Knob Creek.
No point in paying above shop prices when it's only a little over a month away to see.

Even so, the satin Gladius in the Ganza was $1897 and I doubt that Knob Creek will be lower in price then the Ganza but one can always wish!

Show prices can actually be better than Ganza prices. That's neither here nor there, however.

My main message was that, if Tim has some patience and doesn't jump on a secondary market blade, he might likely find a better deal at the not-too-distant Knob Creek.

Now, I might be wrong...Lord knows that it wouldn't be the first time, and definitely not the last... :o:D But I don't recall seeing the post where Jerry announced that no more Gladius's would ever be made or sold again. We both know that older style "discontinued" knives have appeared at recent shows before. And...not saying that you're wrong on the price...But if a great price was offered to us at the BLADE show this year, there might possibly be a different lower price on a Gladius if a few wind up on the table in an upcoming show...although I do highly doubt it'll be anywhere near that spectacular low price we saw in Atlanta back in June!

Dan, I know that you are in this for not only your own collection, but to make money too...the Dealer membership makes this plain to see. But, may I suggest being very careful about any advice that you give which may cause Jerry to lose even a little business? And... please be fair in the advice that you give... After all, you were new once too. :)

Welcome aboard:thumbup: It will take you awhile to become familiar with all the Busse lingo, but you'll learn fast. "I'll Take It" and "Put it on my credit card" will come natural:)

I recalling this being my advise:

As for

I believe it was a reply to Guyon's reply. But was not advise. I just think the Gladius is going to show up as much as the Integral Dagger, and I think they have similarities beyond being just both being double edged. But that's just my two cents.

1) What is the relationship between Busse, SwampRat, and Junk Yard knives if any?

Busse = Jerry Busse
Swamp Rat = Jennifer Busse (Jerry's Wife)
Scrap Yard = Dan Busse (Jerry's Brother)

2) Why is there so few models available directly from the company at any time?

It is the new way Busse has been doing their offerings. They offer a couple of knives or one for a month to few months and fill orders as placed then move on to other projects. Older models make an occasional appearance in the gaanzas but usually are more unique in configurations, etc.

3) Is the best way to buy waiting here for an announcement of a "gaanza" event and jumping on that? (Other than individuals, which it seems, there are many who have way too many knives on their hands I must say, lol. I hope I don't catch that bug!)

The gaanza's are the epitome of the trough (were Hog's feed :) ). It would be easier to post in the WTB (Want to buy) section for a particular knife or check the Knife Exchange regularly.

4) You all throw all these knife acronyms around for models and I can't find anything on them as far as specs. I would have thought the company would have a reference page with all the details for all models but I don't see it. I am also surprised that no Busse fanatic has put together a comprehensive list of all models with specs and such, but maybe they have and I haven't found it.

www.hogcult.com as others have posted is good. The older and no longer maintained site was www.badmojo.tv which has a bit of history and still worth checking out. Also, if you see something in particular you have questions about, just ask. The group here is great about helping out as best they can with specs, pics, etc.

5) Do older models ever come up again for purchase from the company or can they ever be ordered from the custom shop?

Custom Shop is a bit of a mystery to me as I'm not sure the of the procedures but you can call Busse Combat and they will be eager to assist you and they rock. You may even get the Janitor

And that's how babies are made. :D

And we are a nutty bunch but have fun. Just roll with it and don't take things too seriously around here.
