or are they the same thing?

also... any preferences of black linen micarta vs black canvas micarta in terms of aesthetics & utility?

links to pictures are highly welcome, thanks in advance.

There is paper micarta and linen micarta. black linin micarta shows a pattern. black paper micarta shows no pattern. Even though it costs more I prefere black linen micarta. Tom Lewis

I could be wrong, but I believe there are at least 4 different types of micarta. Paper, linen, canvas and the old rag micarta that you can't get anymore.

eh.. i began a search within the mazelike site & gave up half way through my search for my simple question.

once again... are black micarta and black linen micarta 2 different kinds??

i'm beginning to think black linen micarta is what i'm looking for - since it's the one that's black yet shows a grain...

anyways, holler @ me.

Yes, you are right, they are 2 different kinds. Paper Micarta has no grain, it's just pure black. Linen Micarta shows a fine wood like grain. Canvas Micarta shows a course grain and when bead blasted gives a more course texture than linen.

If you are looking for a good pattern you should try out Black G10
I think it is eaiser to work than micarta.I take it to 220 grit
on the grinder than I hand sand it with Wet dry sand paper
with water on it and I work up to 600 grit it really brings out
the woven pattern in the handle.Just my thoughts.:)
Man I think Micarta stinks when worked, the smell makes me sick to my stomach:barf: But for all around wear Micarta and G10 are hard to beat.
Danbo I wish I could still find some old rag micarta, kinda like gold:D

I have started to use Black Linen Micarta but have a question about how to work it.

I seek to make a knife that a deer hunter would like to use in the field , in winter, in the cold, with bloody hands.

How would you finish the handle to give the best grip?

so far I have sanded untill I buffed it, but the handle appears too smooth in my view to be trustable...

what should I try?

I'm with Nathan on the smell thing. I'd rather smell nasty old cow horn than micarta or G10. If I wear a mask it's not too bad. The organic-filter masks are pretty good for eliminating smells. It just stinks up the shop for when I take the mask off.

If you're looking for a substitute for rag Micarta, you might want to try this guy...

www.fibermascus.com

He can make about any type of material out of whatever you want. His burlap is really neat.
