New here...Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm trying to decide between a ESEE-3 or ESEE-4. It'll mainly be used for camping/fishing and not as an EDC. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I just ordered an orange handled RC-4 for the same purpose. If it's for camping you can't go wrong with the 4.

Honestly, if there are not concerns with daily carry, I'd go with the 4. Joe has the right idea. :D

I recently got the RC-4 OD green with Orange handle and love it. It's a great size for a camp knife. Works well in the kitchen and speaking of that, I'm going to go make a late lunch now and cut the veggies up with it. Got my self some nice folders for the smaller stuff. ;)

ESEE 4 is the one I would recommend to most first time buyers. (aside from Izula)

I'm going to buck the trend and say the 3. It's just as versatile as the 4, it's a better slicer, and easier to carry. Plus, I'm not a kydex fan. [I think I may have just blasphemed w/ that kydex comment].

I'd say it depends on your usage. If you are going to be slicing things as opposed to heavier cutting tasks ie batoning (the 3 will still handle light batoning) and you don't need the extra length the 4 offers, the 3 is more comfortable to carry and wield because of it's lighter weight.

That said the is 4 is very robust and if you foresee the need for a heavier duty edc then you won't go wrong with that.

ESEE-3 or ESEE-4, thats like asking if I should buy a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton pickup truck.

Both are great for their intended application and there's alot of crossover where both work very good for the same task.

I have both knives. I use the ESEE-4 more.

Thanks for all your input. I just ordered a ESEE-4 OD w/ Orange Handles and the HEST. I figure the HEST is almost the same size as the ESEE-3 and couldn't decide on one, I got both. Looks like I'm starting my addiction late compared to you guys. The next question, what to get after this?!

Either one will do well, if you're going to be batoning a lot then I'd go with the 4. If you're just looking fro a nice little knfie with good cutting efficieny then go with the 3.

i recently got the 3 and really like it, very comfortable and sufficient blade length for EDC, cant say about the 4 though.

If I hadn't just ordered one I would have wanted to come see yours, Heber! ;)

Joe, you are still more then welcome to come to Provo and check out my RC4 and other knives. I have way more knives then I know what to do with... We should hookup for a campout and test our new RC4's in one of their nateral enviroments. ;)

Cut up the potatoes for lunch with my RC 4 this afternoon and will be cutting up the veggies for fried rice with it in a few minutes. It does a good job dicing onions, garlic and other stuff. I could say that about my SOG Revolver, Kershaw Echo and others too but since this thread is about which Rat, I thought I'd share how I've been using my RC4 today.
