Okay so I just got my first SAK - a tinker! Why it took me this long to discover them is a mystery. Now I now what all you guys are on about. This thing is amazing: blades that take a razor edge easily, great fit and finish and impressive walk and talk. All for just under $20! OK OK I can hear you all shouting in unsion WE KNOW. These things put a good many slipjoints twice their price to shame. Needed to fix the vacuum cleaner today took the whole thing apart, cleaned it and put it back together with only the Tinker!! All I can think of is what other models could I use :)
OK, here's the dumb question. What is the reamer intended for? Looks like some kind of gouging/piercing tool?
Thanks for reading!

Dr van Nostrom, you are right. SAKs, especially the Victorinox ones are the most versatile pocket multitools with really good knife blades.
The reamer is indeed a gouging/piercing tool with the sewing eye on the plastic scaled SAKs and without on the alox ones (e.g. Soldier, Pioneer).

Exactly what littleknife said. I have used it when I wanted to puncture something but didn't want a blade to fold on my fingers or a make big hole that the blade would make if I had used it instead. I may be wrong, but the reamer was probably included in the first SAK back in the late 1800's as a way to make safer adjustments to military straps (leather and canvas) without worrying about the blade folding on you.

After you slice a little salami and cheese, have some crackers and use the corkscrew (oh yeah, the Tinker doesn't have one) to open that bottle of wine, you can use the awl to make a new hole in your belt.

To add my $0.02. I've owned many knives, but when it comes to EDC I always have my Victorinox Executive in my pocket along with whatever is in my current tactical EDC rotation.

I get tired of the plastic handles on the SAK's so I generally re-handle them with something more interesting, like the attached pix of my pearl VN Executive. I know that I loose the toothpick and tweezers but am willing to sacrifice them for the appearance update.

Enjoy!

That is nice man! The pearl and the lanyard really adds a whole lot to it. How do you attach the new scales, I can't see any pins so I am guessing it is glued on? Me thinks you could have a little business going there!!!! I would like to see my SAK with some kind of wooden handle (cocobolo) or maybe a bone or horn handle.
If you have more pics please post em!!
Thx

Thanks for the kind words. It justs takes time and patience to rehandle an SAK knife. I machine the new scales to fit then glue them on. If anyone's interested in a customized SAK just email me.

Attached is a picture of a VN Tinker with Kudu horn scales.

Thanks!
Scott

The swiss champ is also available in palisanderwood, mother of pearl, stag horn and horn (all with toothpick and tweezers).
The classic in palisanderwood.
Further there were more Victorinox available in wood and horn but they are nearly sold out. I have only one huntsman with palisanderwood in stock and a Tourist in horn.
It´s real a pitty that Victorinox made them no more :(
