Dumb soldering question

Hello folks,

I've got three knives that are ready for soldering guards on and have a really dumb question.
Once I've cleaned the joints, etc,... with acetone (or whatever), slid the guard on the tang, applied flux and applied an even heat to the bottomside (handle side of guard) of the tang and guard junction, should I apply the solder to the top or the bottom of the guard?

Thanks a lot!

Dana,

Put the solder on top. The theory is to draw the solder from the top on through the guard to seal the joint. The solder should come through to the bottom. This isn't always easy to do. I use a 1/16 inch rod to drop the flux on and help push the solder around so it will flow. Remember the flux will etch the steel, so try not to get it all over the blade and guard or leave it on too long.

These joints are filled by capillary action which means the joints should be fitted carefully .A joint of about .003" is the best !!!

for the help. I've got a pretty nice fit for these pieces and am hoping that
I can do the blades justice with a nice soldering job.

I'm using the stay brite flux and solder, by the way.

Many thanks,
Dana
