Hi everyone, greetings from Somerset, England.

Recently I was lucky enough to score a first-generation Dumpster Mutt, the ones with the slightly fatter blade and the reclaimed 'Basics' handle. This particular example looks to have been bought new in 2007 and kept in a drawer since. It's never had much of an edge on it.

My usual sharpening routine would be with a two-sided 8" oilstone on a table, coarse side then fine, trying for a 22deg edge right along the blade. Maybe a leather strop at the end if the knife seems to want it.

DMs aren't exactly common in the US and they're pretty thin on the ground over here, so I don't want to screw this one up. Can anyone tell me better?

Your plan sounds good to me. I have owned my fair share of Busse and Kin over the years. I tend to thin them out behind the edge because I don't often have to cut the hinges off a car door. I never had the opportunity to own a Dumpster Mutt, but I did own a Yard Keeper and I regret selling it, I didn't think I would use it and now I gravitate towards relatively lightweight drop points. Great knife you have there, use and enjoy it as it was intended.
