I'd been thinking that I needed to get a new computer game for a couple months now. I'd been replaying Dungeon Keeper I (for the 3rd time!) :D when I saw an article of Yahoo about free, online games. I've since joined Dungeon Runners and have been thrilled with it. I created an account for my son, and we group up and slay & loot together.

I'm not going to provide a link, as I don't want this to be seen as spamming.

It's been almost a dream come true to have someone as "into the game" as my son has been. He gets on line at home while I'm at work and boosts his character level, then brags about it when I get home! :D But, if he gets and swords/armor that I can use, he saves them for me. It's kind-of a parody of WoW, built in the style of Diablo. Gameplay is fun, and the loot/monsters is scaled in proportion to the group size/experience.

Highly, highly recommended. If you do join, check out the Monster Bait skill! :D :D

The also listed Urban Dead as another free game. I joined that one as well, but it's MUCH harder to get into. I've been on the Wiki page reading up on that. I've been killed 5 times and revived 4, so far. The SLOOOOOW pace of this game makes it hard to recommend, but if you only have a couple minutes a day, it may be perfect.

I don't ever play the RPG type games, but I know some people who play Silk Road online, which I believe is a free game as well. they seem to like it.

There is a several similar games to Silk Road that use the same MMORG engine as the monthly pay game Lineage II.

Many of them are "free" to play, but to really be competitive, you have to purchase some sort of game tokens for better potions that allow easier killing or more experience per kill. I believe Silk Road is one of these games. Nothing wrong with that and you can play for free...

Another truly free game is called Hero. I played it for a few months, it was enjoyable.

I cant believe I'm going to recommend this as I swore I would not , from all the troubles this darn game has given me since buying it.
Let me first say you should a robust system to play this , mostly in your video card area , I would go a little higher than the recommended specs , if you got that then..........
Neverwinter Nights 2 is the name of the game.
It has vast hours of reply value because of the numerous mods that are made for it and will continue to be made for it in the next few years , there is a good amount of replay value in the campaign game itself since you can choose so many different characters and class combinations.
There is one mod in the works that will be styled after LOTR and I hear it will be stunning.
The graphics are pretty amazing too , they make WoW look like a poorly done cartoon , IMO.

Thanks for the 'link' to DR , I'll give it a look.

I must say that I've never been able to get into the traditional RPG. I don't like third-person POVs, and I don't like turn-based combat.

I did enjoy Morrowind, (Elder Scrolls) but that's more like an FPS. First-person viewpoint, and you do your own hacking, slashing, and shooting. (I know, there's a "hidden" level-based system that weighs the likelyhood/damage of your blows, but it FEELS like a first-person game.

A recent entry into that field is Dark Messiah. Has a lot of promise, with great graphics and an improved combat system that actually lets you block, use different strikes, and so forth. However, I lost interest about a third of the way in when it becomes a continual "escort mission". HATE those.... Brainless fool wants to get eaten by a dragon, let 'em, I say....:D

Waiting patiently for the Forgotten Hope mod for Battlefield 2 to come out. The Devs promise "Summer".... Forgotten Hope is a WWII "realism" mod for the Battlefield series. Played the hell out of the original version, and "2" has been in the works for a while now.
