Here are the ingredients for a new hunter MS Rick Dunkerley is making for me, forged CPM10V and stag. As you can see Rc hardness is 64--heat treatment by Phil Wilson. I've used Rick's forged 10V for some time now, and it is very aggressive and seems to hold its edge for an eternity. His primary grind is fairly acute to a nice thin edge, leaving very narrow edge bevels which are not hard to maintain using good diamond hones.

Blade is a shade over 5" long, 3/16" thick, knife to be under 10" OAL. Cut and mortised tang, as you can see (the tang may be shortened a half inch or so to fit within the stag).

He'll apply some nice contouring to the stag. I'll post a picture when it's done--he's finishing up now.

Off to an excellent start - looking forward to the completed knife.

Will, that is going to be really nice!

That is my kind of knife. I am really curious about the forged 10V.

I imagine 10V is a bitch to forge.

Rick does some excellent work. I will be very interested to see how this one turns out. It should be very nice.

After watching Dan Farr forge out a 1V hunter, I want no part of it at all. The end product, you betcha! Just not the work to get it there.:o

Thanks for the compliments. For hunter-size knives that are used hard, such as in field dressing and butchering large game in the field, I don't know of another steel I'd prefer. Good toughness and extreme wear resistance with very aggressive cutting action. Honestly, I don't know if the forging process adds anything--I can't tell much difference in normal use between forged and stock-removal 10V.

Here's a link to Crucible's CPM page--punch on CPM 10V for elemental specs and comparisons with other steels:

Here's a photo Rick snapped of the finished knife before sending it to me. He's still working on the sheath and should ship this week. I think the amber stag is a nice touch, and the engraving of the guard in his Western style is a welcome embellishment.

Wow - that is one elegant piece. Methinks you're gonna love it. ;)

Methinks so, too! Thanks, Roger.

Thanks for the congrats, Stumpy.

From the picture and specs, I have hopes that this is one of those rare pieces that exceeds the lofty expectations I typically have when placing an order. Fun to share it.
