durability of blade coatings

Gents,

I am looking to buy a Strider SnG with black oxide coating. I have only one other knife with a coating and that is my MT LCC. I am wondering how durable knife coatings are.

My LCC has cut some softer materials and the coating looks none the worse, but what happens when you start cutting wood or plastic or perhaps even a can. Does the coating deteriorate quickly?

Does anyone have experience with the Strider coatings? All new models seem to have the tiger striping (which unfortunately I don't like). Can they take a beating? I would think they should, as Strider knives are built to take a beating. It wouldn't make sense to put a 'fragile' coating on the knives. Any experiences are very welcome.

Cheers,

DUCky

any coating will scuff up and/or scratch, they all will. if ya are bothered by scuffs/scratches, dont get a coated blade imho. now, the coating will provide a degree of protection to the blade even if scuffed up/scratched up, but they all will scuff when ya cut, well, virtually anything imho.

I have a third gen. SNG with the coated blade and SIFU1A is right ALL coating scratch and wear off eventually. The coating on mine has held up well though, I cut alot of cardboard, but you still can see some bare spots. I still like the coated blade on the SNG's the best and would buy another. I'm sure once the coating starts to wear too bad the Strider guys would recoat it for you.

I've got a Type3 HA flashlight in my SAR bag, and while I definately can't scratch it, it does wear off after being used/carried/etc. The way I look at it, the coating is taking the scratches & wear before the metal itself, so why not?
