Durable finish?

I've heard good things about this company's knives.
Just wanted to ask if the coating is quite durable. Can it take some light duty chopping without the coating coming off? Will a polish or wax like Flitz be ok for this type of blade?

Light duty chopping, it probably won't come off, but there will be some scuffing. Trying to keep coating pristine on a user is a losing battle, though.

I use all mine fairly often and I've found the rough finish just smooths out instead of flaking off. Actually I don't think I've seen a pic of a ESEE blade with the coating chipping off.

Regular wear and tear is another story...if will eventually wear off after lots of use.

It's tough.

These ain't made to be pretty though. I actually prefer when it wears smooth. It looks cool and cuts better (albeit only very slightly).

Mine has some worn off on the spine and sides from batoning. But I like the look of it used. If it's not used, what's the point in having it?
It's probably one of the toughest coatings I've seen.

I've had the coating chip off my Izula due to light baton work with it. Bothers me not one bit.

I've seen a bunch of photos with them worn..but we're talking serious long term use. I baton my RC6 often, and the coating is mostly just smoothed out, with one major gouge in it that didn't break. It's a nice thick powder coat.

Which one are you considering for chopping? Aside from the junglas, they're all really kinda short knives for it...

Thanks for the input everyone.
I will probably only chop small tree limbs, and brush.
I was just hoping it be like the folder I have by Ontario where coating peeled off just opening cardboard boxes.

dont underestimate card board boxes there rough customers on an edge ...

and the coating is much much better then on the rat1 folder ... but still can be stripped if you wish. i messed up the coating on the rat1 folder just opening it the first time....

the ontario RAT1 folder has a coat of spray paint - the ESEE knives have baked on powder coats -- no comparison. (and yeah, my RAT1 started chipping/peeling the first time I cut something harder than butter, too -- but the edge retention is good and that's the part I care about)

I’ve batoned with my RC-4 a few times and while the coating hasn’t come off, there is “streaking” of the coating from the high pressure and pinching of passing through the wood.

The coating isn’t like a paint that chips off, it will rub off with friction, just like finish on guns (e.g. holster wear). I wasn’t too sure about the finish at first either, but I don’t think they could have a better solution for the price. You won’t be disappointed.

If you notice more finish wear on knives in the RAT/ESEE forum, it’s because we USE them! :D

yeah the textured powder coat is one of my favorites, it wears well compared to other coatings and it looks nice, :D
