Rambling Impromptu video when I putting edge on 2nd of 4 production knives.

My old burr/wire-edge removal technique fold burr/wire by scrape edge laterally with a piece of wood. My recent edge integrity check also fold the burr/wire by crush/compressive them against hardwood surface. I, since, switched to using this new technique because it does both burr/wire removal and integrity check at the same time.

Test knife: Niolox 65.5rc ht 2.5 ringed ridgee handle

Thanks for watching.

Luong,

Thanks, .....
Please don’t keep tempting with Niolox goodness

How different the burr folding using this method (push apex to wood) vs older one (push apex sideways also with wood)?

PS: The knife reminds me of Cold Steel Frenzy :)

Thanks Chris!

I probably will make a more prepared video, which would go more into anatomy and removal physics(for various methods) of &burr/wire. Short answer to your question: Laterally push/scrape apex sideways put 2-3x lateral force on apex-decorated-carbides than matrix, as consequence some carbide interfaces are fractured & removed, hence higher edge irregularity than goal.

CSF has straight profile and wharncliffe edge vs this niolox hunter blade is 1/4" up from flat point/tip (has some belly) and whole knife has relaxed-shrimp (hahaha) profile.

I found flat + super hard wood worked best, it allows very little penetration. Which would expose gaps/toothiness for target apex flatness (level of toothiness). I've tried/used glass at very low pressure and cut dampened barber neck-strip when sharpen edge for hair feathering (sharper than razor to scrape-cut hair between 2 fingers, yield clean angle cut with texture look).

I didn't test for low hrc threshold whence this technique won't work, especially steels with 1+um carbide. I am gut-guessing 15dps 58rc. Then for low rc, use softer woods.

Thank you for posting the vid.
I would like to try it myself.
How hard the wood should be?
Would MDF plate work?
