Most days, I wear standard cotton socks and they work fine, but they have been wearing out like crazy! This morning, I put on a good pair, and by 10 am the heel on one of them was torn through!

I'm tired of these cheap socks! What should I get that would be comfortable but durable?

I can't believe i just asked for advice on socks!

;) :p

Smartwool Socks. Pricey, but very nice. $10-$16 a pair depending on sales, etc.

Wigwam makes some nice wool socks as well. Not as expensive as Smartwool, but not as cheap as cotton athletic socks either.

Look no further than the Thorlo wool/silk Light Hiker. They've kept me warm in the winter, and dry during the summer. I haven't managed to wear out a pair yet. If I had the money, I'd throw out every other sock in my drawer, and replace them all with Thorlo Light Hikers.

ThorLo = Good
Smartwool = Best

Thats all I have to say on that.. More expensive but way more comfortable and last forever also.

That's interesting. I wore out a pair of SmartWools last summer while Hiking in the Adirondacks. My wool/silk Thorlos still look brandy spankin' new. Maybe you tried the cheaper Thorlo Coolmax socks? The wool/silk socks are much better than the Coolmax.

Not for everyday wear, but my Thorlo Hikers are great. Put many miles in 'em and they hold up well.

For everyday wear, I have some Champion and Nike crew socks (black) that have held up very well. Especially the Champion which I've had for years (believe it or not).

Thorlo Hikers are GREAT.

I'm a correctional officer and I'm standing or walking on concrete all day. The Thorlos are great socks and along with my Danners, they keep my "dogs" in good shape. What kind of work are you doing? If you are on your feet much, spend the extra money for quality footwear and socks. Take care of your feet and they'll take care of you!

My Thor-lo Combat Boot Socks just came in from the http://www.sockcompany.com/ I have been off and not gotten a chance to try them out. I bought them after talking to the gear gurus on Assaultweb.net. Hope this helps.

Besides my knifemaking hobby (not really a business considering I haven't sold anything yet..) I work at a church doing audio and lighting work. Most of my work consists of moving around heavy equipment. :eek:

I've been working in my Vans and cotton socks, and at the end of the day my feet hurt! I need to get some good boots...I keep hearing great things about Danner, but it is hard to imagine spending so much on shoes...

for running socks .... thorlo (blue heeled ones) are the best

hiking ...i have lots of smartwool and thorlo. both are great. i have worn out thorlo but never smartwool. some of mine are going on 3 years and have lots of use.

the thorlo coolmax are much thinner as stated. make sure you get the expedition weight smartwool...they are the thickest(they come in multiple thicknesses like thorlo). there is also a company called dahlgren that makes alpaca wool socks...very nice

if you are ever in statesville, nc ...check out the thorlo outlet...they have every pair they make and great prices. it is in the walmart plaza off i-40. about 45 min n of charlotte and 40 min west of winston-salem.

bandaidman...lover of good socks

Steven Roos,

I encourage you to check out Danners. the gtx series are pretty nice and feel alot loke a cross trainer shoe. About 150 dollars Acadias are nice but cost even more(200). Bates and Rocky make some good shoes and boots also.

Spend the money.

I have not heard of this other brand, but I wear Wig-Wam socks. I believe that they are Marino, with a hydrophobic sole and a hydrophillic upper.

At first I thought that they might be kind of thick. But once on, they feel great and the shoe doesn't feel tight.

I guess I usee them because in Wisconsin you can buy them anywhere; a buddy of mine is a sportswear dealer.

For hiking, smartwool is great, but i burn right through them. Patagonia artificial fibres last longer. Finnwool are really good and can be used every day, But a dressier sock that really lasts is the Tilley.

Why not?? You just use your knife a few times a day. You wear your socks at least 12 hours a day. I can't think of a more important thing to get quality for, other than shoes of course.

Underwear, johnnie! Underwear is more important, no?
Itchy, hot, scratchy feet are bad, but...:eek:

Dunno. It just seems odd asking for advice on socks online, but of course, I've learned a few things that I wouldn't have discovered otherwise.
