Duracoat/Cerakote Edge Question

For those of you that have used Duracoat or Cerakote on a knife blade, what have you had the best luck with, mask the cutting edge and not coating it at all, or sharpen the edge after coating to remove what you've put on?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer.

I have done it both ways. Just whatever is easier for you. Most of the time I put the edge on last, for safety reasons during sheathmaking.

I had this Griptilian Duracoated recently. About 5 days after it was sprayed, I ran the edge over a stone and the Duracoat came right off.

Before removal.

Thanks for the information, and for the picture (I really like that color). I will give it a try both ways. I am thinking that removing it with a stone afterward it is probably easier to make it look neat and even than trying to mask.

I never mask, ever. I coat the entire blade, after HT/temper. The blade is then sharpened.

Any material that will remove steel in the effort of sharpening will also remove Cerakote.

I started putting on an initial bevel and then coating the blade (gunkote). I like doing that because I put the bevels on with a grinder at low speed, so there are a lot of strokes, which opens up more opportunity for error. A small slip can cause you to have to recoat the whole blade. I hate having to recoat the whole blade. If you get it about where you want it before coating then it only takes a few passes to take the coating off the edge and sharpen it.

How tough is this finish on the knife? (either one) And is this something you can do yourself or is it better sending out?

Duracoat is tough. You can buy a little do-it-yourself kit online, which looks pretty easy.

I am with shotgunner on this one....I NEVER mask off the edge. You can't get a uniform look, and it serves no real purpose as a few passes with a sharpening stone and the Cerakote is gone. If it will remove metal then it will remove Cerakote.

Duracoat is fairly tough but Cerakote is much, much tougher. This is proven........

I do mask off my convex edges befor coating.

Man I love you work with the skull airbrush stencils. What paint do you use over the coating (or are your skulls painted with the coating too?)

Edit this, I went to your site. Very impressive work!!

Here's a question for you, how durable IS the Duracoat compared to Cerakote?
