Folks,

Just purchased an RD-7. Finish is satin and appears to have been originally black and finish removed ?

Can you use Duracoat sucessfully? This is advertized for firearms quite a bit. Lots of color choices.

Does anyone do this for a reasonable price?

If coating is too darn expensive or a bad choice, can it be polished to a matte or satin finish by someone who knows what they are doing ?

Also, currently has black micarta handles. Can I get OD G-10 replacements reasonably? Tried to email Justin at Ranger with no response as yet.

Thanks

Any coating pretty much is guaranteed to wear off eventually. Duracoat is about the strongest standard paint. Gunkote would be better, but the baking might ruin the temper as it is doen at 300F IIRC. Not sure about the handles. You can have the handle polished or sand blasted by most knife makers/modders. Tom Krien comes to mind.

I have a list of Duracoat projects for this spring. Knives and others. Most are flat black.

I would coat it for a reasonable price. Name a color.

Absolutely! Lots of makers do work like that. Including yours truly.

The Brownells site says 300F, yes. No worries, 300F won't harm the temper on any steel I know of. Scorching the handle material might be a different story.

Thanks All! Got in touch with Justin. Am now in good hands. He is able to set me up for less than I pay for a tank of gas in the minivan.

Good Show.
