I am a big fan of the mule runs. I am also interested in the duratech steel but it is so expensive. does anyone know if spyderco has considered it?

Sal stated that he tested it a long time ago. I believe it was so long ago it was before it was called 20CV. Not sure what it was called then, or what the results of the testing were.

I like the steel better than S30V myself, having had the SOG "team leader" in 20CV since it first was released last year.

R.Hinderer has used it in his XM 18. He supposedly has been trying a new steel as of late, but most XM 18's are 20CV.

G.Lightfoot used it for a while in his line of folders, and IIRC, Microtech did a Lightfoof LCC DA 20CV folder. I don't think many were produced as they are collectors items. Joe

I have a SOG team leader in this steel. I have not been able to get it to a razor type edge. It definitely holds it's edge a pretty long time. When I got it I put it to Crock Stix and got a shaving edge. It has held the edge through the last few months of kitchen duty and box cutting. Pretty impressive edge retention. I would like to see the Boye steel or Talonite on a Mule. That would be cool. If the Mule keeps going it would be neat if Spyderco offered handle slabs for sale and sheaths.

IIRC Sal said that a generic mold for handles would cost upwards of $250,000 just to start, shaped handles could be even more expensive. Sheaths and such are always dependent on the handles, unless you have a pouch type leather or nylon sheath.

Molding is not the only option. Cnc'ing Micarta or G-10 is not even close to $250,000, probably more like $2500 to program the cnc...

True, but the labor costs and the material costs will far exceed (in the long run) more then a FRN mold.

It's a catch between selling expensive micarta or G-10 handles, or paying a large upfront cost for a mold in order to sell cheaper handles.

Spyderco seems to have adopted the strategy it's better to just make the blades. :)
