I crazily bought a few XM-18s a few months back, one with a Duatech 20v blade and a new Gen model in S35VN, both Spanto and flippers. I love them both, they are the two nicest knives I've ever encountered, but I likely won't be able to afford to keep both. They are both new, so the only difference outside of the Hinderer logo on the new one, is the steel.

I understand that Duratech is similar (the same?) to M390. I have never seen other knives in Duratech 20v. Was this steel exclusive to Hinderer?

Being as both knives are desinged to be tough with the Spanto tip, but not the greatest slicers, does S35VN make more sense? Is the Duratech more succeptible to chipping because of the higher hardness of the steel? If I do eventually have to sell one off, I would really like to make sure I am hanging on to the best model. Thanks for any advice guys

Flip a coin or keep the one you like best aesthetically, I wouldn't make a choice based on the steel (personally) both great steels. (Duratech 20cv/ CPM s35vn)
Congrats !
Seen cut/edge durability tests on both and the knives tested did not have the edge geometry and heat treat of RHK - Both steels
performed in exemplary fashion.
If Rick uses it..... :)

I'd eat some ramens and keep Both ;)

Thanks Rubicon, good advice on the Ramen noodles, I will be actively searching for a way to save some money and keep these guys!

If you ever need the funds & have to sell one, I'd let the S35VN go. 20CV/M390/CTS-204P is considered a super steel in my book. Ricks S35VN also performs very well because of its higher hardness.
If you financially can keep both & test out edge retention 1st hand that would sound fun being that they are exactly the same just different steel.

My experience has been that I am happy when I figure out a way to keep my Toys when the sale is motivated by cashflow.
As for ALL the Super Steels Rick has used.... IF I had to sell one of mine, it would be for reasons other than "which steel" it was.
Good luck with it either way you decide.
