Got a Gen. 4 XM-18 coming with a Duratech 20cv blade. How is the stain/corrosion resistance on this steel compared to other available Hinderer steels, or other steels in general. I would not be concerned but this blade is bead blasted, and I live 300ft from the ocean. I am also curious if Hinderer crew bead blasts the whole blade, or do they keep do they keep the pivot area satin? I have done a search and can not find much on this steel when compared to others. Any additional information on the steel would be appreciated. BTW leading me to a chart with steel properties won't help unless the properties are explained :o...

If I lived 300ft from the ocean and could muster concern over much ..... :) I would simply make sure my EDC had a nice light oil all the time. Use it - Clean it - oil it.
Congrats on your locale as well as your new acquisition, It is a great steel and a great knife. The whole blade is bead blasted.
Maintain as you would any other piece of quality gear and have no fear.

P.S. Chromium level very high which translates to rust/stain resistance.

If it's the little green one you posted in the other thread it's not a "Gen 4" as 3" XMs only have two "generations" thus far.

As for the bead-blasted stain resistance I'm sure it's less resistant than stonewashed but if you are decided to use the knife then do so without too much concern. If and when stains and such occur then you have a couple options and even sending the knife in for refurbishing somewhere down the road is an option.

The Farm will actually swap out my bead blast blade for a different finish, because if they do I will send them an email. I figure they might bead blast a tumbled blade but not swap a bead blast for a tumbled blade (or working finsh:D). Yeah, it is that blade and I just have a bad habit calling all the more recent logo xm-18's blades gen 4.

Nope. They will only redo the knife as it was originally created.

It is the American version of Bohler M390. If you look up M390, you will find more info than you can shake a stick at. :-) As for its corrosion resistance, it is very, very corrosion resistant. I would go so far as to say that you don't really have to do much at all except keep it dry. It's a 20% chromium steel, and as such it is pretty darn "stainless".

The blade was actually delivered with light rust on the top cut out on the blade, I sanded it off with 2000 grit on the side with rust and the side without, to make the finish look even. I am guessing the sender never lubricated the blade before he delivered it, or he got sweat or some kind of moisture on the blade before he wrapped it in plastic. Anyway's its all good now. Thanks for all the responses
