I know this topic has been discussed recently, just wondered if anyone has come up with a great way to collect the hot materials off the grinder. I am installing a dust collection system for all the dust creating tools, but don't want to send red hot sparks through those dainty plastic tubes and into a bag full of wood chips. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Terry

Terry, John Mallett of Tru-Grit sells the boxes needed to safely use that type of system. I can't remember the name of them at the moment, but i'm sure he does.:D

I don't think they are on his site, so you might have to call him.

My understanding is there is a book out that deals with dust collection set up. Usually runs around $5 on Ebay.

Terry I am in the same boat w/ you I guess. I have a large Torit type collector to put in and I too want to put a water stop in to prevent sparks from gettting to the bags and causing fire or explosion. What I have considered is getting a galvanized metal trash can and putting about 18" of water in the bottom. Cutting holes in the top of the lid for the collected air to come into the can and extend it to about six inches above the water and pointed directly at it. The outlet would be higher (just a couple of inches of pipe/tube inside the lid). The lid could be duct taped on if the air wanted to leak too badly or blow the lid off the can. Should also make an effetive pre-catcher for gunk also. What cha think??

Sounds like a good idea Bill! Would a 5 gallon plastic bucket be big enough? Those can be had for free around construction sites and the lids make their own seal so they should be able to handle the vacuum. Also there wouldn't be any problem with rust.

I think Ol Bill's chambered plan may be the way I go. Of course if you ever saw samples of his manufacturing skills you'd be impressed. Thanks for the input and happy making to you all. :) Terry

Thanks Terry for the compliment on my limited skills.

L6 a bucket would work for a small collector - but the one I have would likely blow the plastic bucket up like a balloon (grin). Not really -- but it has a 3 HP motor and a large squirrel cage blower so it will move a lot of air. I need to plumb the shop w/ 6" line and install shut offs on the individual stations where I put in drops. Will get around to that "one of these days real soon now".
