Not to beat a dead horse too much longer, but I got the dust separator I ordered, hooked it up between my dust collector and the intake at the belt grinder and IT WORKS GREAT! It sits on top of a 30 gal. metal garbage can and practically nothing is getting to the dust collector bag. I got mine from Tool Crib of the North, but woodworders supply has them also and I think I've seen them in other woodworking catalogs also.

Does any noise come from the separator. My collector is behind an 18" brick wall which reduces all but some slight whistling sounds from the gates.I have been eyeballing the separator but was worried that it might be noisy with the steel can and all. Also if I got the separator I would get the floor sweep attachment I bet it would make cleaning the shop floor a breeze.Any one using one on their system?

Ben, too many years of pulling a trigger has ruined my hearing, but I can hear anything large and hard (like a small block of wood and some small scraps of sandpaper whirling around in the can. I doubt if the grinding dust would be noticeable above the noise of the air intake. I got the floor sweeper attachment, but screwed it to the floor near the belt grinder. I just sweep the floor toward the floor intake and all the dirt just "disappears" - no messing around with a dust pan. I got the metal can with the idea of not having hot metal particles sitting in a plastic container, but on further consideration, I have a plastic hose going to the can, and the air flow through the hose probably cools even the coarse steel bits from profiling a blade before they get very far down the hose.
