I stock remove in my basement which is a small 12x10 area. I bought a wen dust collector for like 130 and it does very little to suck up any dust. It is also loud.
So just asking for dust collection ideas, only for wood, for my 2x72?
Any help appreciated!

I worked a cabinet shop in my youth. They had a similar dust collector.

The big wood chips, it did find. However, the cloth bag would emit the finest of dust. Big chunks it would catch but it did nothing for powder.

Ideas, connect your machine to where it's outside the work area. Or go HEPA. Filter the blow by of the cloth bag using a secondary filter system.

Piggy back that with area filters. Box fan and AC filters.

Hi Happy,

Dust collection all comes down to having suction, and applying it well. Fortunately, if you are only dealing with wood, you do not have the issue of steel spark management that many have to consider in knife making.

What is it that is not effective about the WEN unit? Usually you can use a base unit like that and be creative with PVC pipe or plastic tubing, and come up with a workable suction solution. I , on the other hand, can never use my own advice as sparks/heat kill the plastic tubing options.

I use a bucket with water for grinding metal.
The problem with the unit is that it lacks power. It struggles to pick up wood chips on the floor for instance.
I am looking at more expensive units but room is the issue

my shop is the same size. I have a 'false' wall with only studs and faced with peg board behind my grinder. Taped to the peg board on the grinder side is fine stainless steel mesh panels, which take care of the bigger dust. Behind that wall are a couple of fans located between the studs with merv 13 filter material taped to them. They manage to work fairly well filtering out the smaller dust. I also have a small shopvac under my grinder that connects to a piece of 6" round duct split in half lengthwise which rests under where the belt is, and I use that when grinding composites

Sweet! The fans are box fans?
yeah, I have one 20" box fan and two 10" ones. Up til recently, I used 20" furnace filters for the 20" fan which was convenient. But they are expensive compared to filter material and there is more waste when it comes time to throw them away and I try to have as small an environmental footprint as I can when it comes to this stuff. I'll try and get a quick vid of the set up. It's super cheap and easy and it works really well

I did a search on that well known website where you can buy just about anything, using 'air filter material'. I found a 16 sq foot sheet of merv 13 material, which seems to provide good airflow and filtration and is easily cut to size.
