Recommendation? Dust collector hood for belt grinders

I purchased a metal dust collector from Jet and have it set up and ready to go next to my 2x72. I do need to get the fittings to actually connect it and get the dust flowing though.

One thing that's been pretty hard to find is a dust hood. The sheet metal hoods meant for radial saws and whatnot that I could find have all been terribly expensive ($70 and up). On the other hand, I've seen a number of inexpensive PVC hoods in various shapes.

If you're using a dust collection system, what sort of hood do you use? Do you need steel, or is PVC fine? What kind of shape are you using?

I had local sheet metal shop fabricate one to my measurements. I took in hose fittings and they did the rest. Mine is shaped like square funnel.

Look in the HVAC fittings section Home Depot, or go to a plumbing and heating supply shop ( best choice). You will find all sorts of funnel shaped floor and ceiling vents, as well as duct reducers, that will work.

Am I right in my assumption that the PVC hoods are not going to work for metal dust and I'll need a metal hood?

What dimensions do you all like the hood to be for the bottom of the 2x72 to catch the vast majority?

I can tell you from experience that PVC/ABS dust collection parts WILL melt/burn.

Stick to metal.

As long as it is past the spark zone, PVC works OK. Use it for ducting and such. Use metal where the sparks hit.

TIP:
Whatever type funnel/bin/hopper you use to catch the sparks and dust, make a piece of 1/4" mesh wire to fit down in it. This will keep knife blades and small things that escape your grip from going down into the sludge filled catch bucket. You probably can figure out how I know this.
