I'm putting a 12' x 24' extension on my shop so I can move a lot of my dust making stuff out there. My question is, how many cubic feet of air do I need as a minimum when buying a blower for a dust collecting system? I just want to vent it to the outside, not into a collector, unless somebody has a reason that I shouldn't do it that way. I realize that more is better, but I'm not wanting a lot of overkill, that will be a waste of money. We live on 3 acres and venting to the outside will not bother anyone. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

it might be good to have a steel drum that it drops into, and a filter bag to let the air go. just so your air isn't filled with dust around your shop.

You might try talking to some one that sells these systems, another option would be to talk to a GOOD heating and air guy, the ones that deal with sizing a system to your house, after all the same thing must be accomplished with heating, maybe just bump it up a little to accomadate dust. Good source for fans too.

my dad owns a union sheetmetal shop. he's put in duct systems for big companies. i'll ask him if he has any idea's on how to do this.
i don't know exactly how much cfm, you should pick up a book on dust collection, i know alot of woodworking supply stores sell them. it mostly depends on how many machines you have, and if they produce dust, chips, or shavings. pipe size will also depend on that.
