I guess this might be a stupid question but....as you know, Canadian winters are not very suited to working in an un-heated garage.
My shop is in the basement, a seperate room with a door. I made a device that goes just underneath the rest on my grinder and my shop vac is connected to that. When I grind, I close the door, turn on the shop vac and it sucks the vast majority of filings and dust up. So a respirator as well as the shop vac should keep me pretty safe I guess? Are the rest of the people in the other part of the basement okay?

 My shop is also in a separate room in the basement. I keep the window open except in the most severe weather. I have a dust collection system and use two ports for the grinder - one on the rear dust port and one under the contact wheel. My new full face respirator is the only thing that hasn't left me coughing after a session. Ask my wife about dust. Never mind the room - it isn't even confined to the same floor.

Marilyn is very understanding, because she makes almost as much dust as I do - but I thought we'd share our dust experience - just so you don't get your hopes up. ;)

Rob!

thanks Rob and Sean, just as I feared.Darned dust.
I do not have a window in my shop and I do have forced air heating.
Guess I will have to fit the family with respirators or heat my garage! :D
Thanks for the replies.

Just be careful you don't start a fire in your shop vac. It's kinda hard on them.

use a water bath dust collector.

Somebody posted a nice pic of one a while back.
5 gal bucket, water in the bottom vac hose connected to bucket. hot sparks go into water....

Thanks for the replies.
I have kinda wondered about sucking those sparks into the shop vac. It certainly does make more sense for them to go into water, I just figured the bucket of water does not suck the dust like a shop vac can. :p

You could always use one of the water filters that drywallers use. That dust will also go everywhere (I've done it) but by putting the water scrubber in-line before the shop vac, very little dust gets out.

Thanks Oldnamvet. Yes, I did some drywall work this summer and did not do a bit of homework first. You know, same as guys asking for directions. I just had a regular bag in there, stopped to take a break and when I started up again the missus disappeared in a cloud of white dust like something outta harry potter. I learned about those bags. :D
Hence, the many questions I ask about knifemaking.
