Wasn’t there a time about 200 Years ago where it was law in the US to own at least 1 Firearm? Somewhere I have read this but I am not sure about its true or not.
If so, what was the explanation of the government?

Thank you
Kurt

Brothers & Sisters of Steel,

Better my Ka-Bar, SOG, REKAT, Balisong, Buck, et al. than a copy of "Castaway".

We could cite the Hank's movie as demonstrative of the necessity to adhere to the Boy Scout principle of "Be Prepared".

I don't know the precise answer to the firearms question. However, my family is from Concord (Old North Bridge, etc) and I recall that to be a member of the militia (e.g., Minutemen) you had to commit to maintaining a firearm, ammo, training, etc.

A pilot friend once told me that in order to fly a private plane in Alaska, you are required to have a firearm on board. I don't know whether that is still true.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful,

DPD.

Is it Switerland or Sweden that requires every house have a weapon? Seems that someone told me that once before. They consider everyone to be part of the militia? Can you confirm this?

In Switzerland we have a Militia Style Army. Which means every Man have to serve some time. At first a 5 month Class and then every second Year a repeating of 3 Weeks. Most European Countries have similar systems, often with a longer first service and lesser/none repeatings.
However in Switzerland as long as you are in the age range for service you become your personal full auto rifle and a sealed box of ammo to store at home.
But there are serious trials to disestablish this and store the rifles at military barracks. Because we have extremely few incidents with this duty weapons the main argument is to prevent suicide.
A critical, bottomed on older data, sight on the work of one of the most dedicated exponent:
