My Sony DVD Player that I've had for 11 years started skipping badly last night on multiple discs so I figured it was time for a new one. I went and bought a Samsung, C500 and it's going back tomorrow this thing is loud and it's so light that it just about launches itself off the shelf when the tray opens. Plus you have to push a ton of buttons just to tell it that you're loading a DVD. It's a DVD player, it should know that I'm loading a DVD and just load it.

I need to find one that is at least decent, for under $100, preferably well under. I'm thinking about a new Sony because 11 year is a long time, but I don't know what to get because an electronics company's quality can plummet in 11 years. I want a DVD Player, not some blue ray combo/mp3/cell phone charger/blender/minibar contraption. I want to put a disc in and have the menu pop up without having to tell it what to do. And it must be quiet; this thing I bought today sounds like a hair drier with a cricket stuck inside. This one doesn't have to be the best, just good until I can afford a great one.

Yes, I am aware that Blue Ray players will play normal DVDs, I can't afford one right now.

I've been happy with my Sony DVP NS575P. It's approx 8+ years old, and has been dependable and easy enough to use. It was not top of the line or top dollar.

I know what you mean about the new lightweight throwaway combo all in one electronic gadgets. Most are all the same, with a different name stamped on the front. I hate them too, but it's getting hard to find anything else. Sometimes it's worth the effort to find reasonable priced older used items.

I think I'll see if they have an affordable Sony that I can trade this stinker in for, maybe it will be another 11 years before I have to think about looking for a new one. :p

I'm sure a nice Blue Ray would fit my needs perfectly, plus, I'd be able to play Blue Ray discs if I ever got it in my head to try them. But they're $$$ and I have $.

There are plenty of blue ray players under $100- even a Sony 3D model on sale at Best Buy.

Don't get me wrong, I'm with you- my TV is a 10 year old Sony CRT and my DVD player is almost as old. I found out how cheap they're building things now when my old printer finally gave up. You can buy printers, and even all-in-ones for less than the ink cartridges, but, boy do you get what you pay for!

All I can suggest is to really do you your homework- read lots of reviews- sometimes the $30 special is better than the more expensive one and sometimes the $110 one is worth every penny and then some.

Id suggest a blue ray player eventually if you have a full HD 1080p T.V . BLue ray quality is out standing. But until then my sony is going strong as well! Its at my trailer and has been for about 8 years.

A DVD player that is skipping may only need a cleaning. Run a cleaning disc on the unit before you toss it.

Haven't needed to buy a Blue Ray player for over $100 yet, have 2 in the home right now (had a 3rd one that I gave away). Both come with wifi and have Netflix & Pandora pre-loaded. I go to Best Buy since I can see them before I buy.

Regarding 10-year electronics, that's probably a thing of the past since all electronics got moved to China. All part of lower prices. Motor noise? You'll have to put up with some if you want a sub-$100 player.

We bought a Sony BDP-S590 3D Blu-ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi before Christmas and we are really happy with it.

Not only does it play all DVD's and Blu Ray discs it also plays pretty much all of the Internet streaming sites. However, I thought that I might be able to play videos from all sites, but it does not have Flash enabled, so those sites do not work.

The picture is beautiful on both DVD's and Blu Ray, plus Netflix stream much better than my HD Roku and it works better. It is also quiet and small. It has all of the HDMI connections and audio connections.

We paid only $95 shipped from Amazon.

I bought a Sony DVP-SR510H. Same price as the Samsung but no hair dryer and cricket sounds. It seems almost as good as my old one.
