DVD Problems

I am having real problems with the DVD player I got my wife for Christmas...but maybe it is a particular DVD.

I got her a Samsung VCR/DVD combo. When we hooked it up and tried playing a kids DVD for the little once, the picture started shaking horribly. We first thought it was the disc, so we took it to the store. They put it in one of their machines and it worked fine, so we kept it. Today we exchanged the actual player for another identical one. We had them hook up the new unit at the store and play the DVD we were having problems with (the actual one we own). Everything looked just great, so we brought the new machine home. Hooked everything up and still have the same problem-jumpy picture. I have done the following to try and isolate the problem: used a single RCA video cable no other no other cables attached; used a lone coax; used a power outlet on a different circuit; used a different outlet on the same circuit; tried it with 'Component Video' both on and off...

I just don't understand why this EXACT machine and EXACT DVD played fine at the store, but not at home. I know nothing about DVD players, so I don't know what their quirks are. I guess I will try to exchange the DVD itself, but could there be something about my house wiring in general that is causing this? My house is 35 years old and is wired with the rubberized braided cable, not Romex. The DVD is Disney's 'Aristocats', could it be something in transferring and old cartoon to DVD that is causing this jumpy picture?

I need your help because this is really starting to P#@$ me off!

I don't mean to sound stupid, but do you view your DVD's though your TV? If so, make sure that it (the TV) is set to the "right" channel...Usually channel 2 or 3.

Another thing to be wary of is the age of your tv & the connection - are you going through another component(vcr/receiver/cable box/etc.) before it enters the TV? The copy protection on many DVDs wont allow this (prevents you from dubbing the DVD). If you have a direct connection to the TV, try another disc. If this works, it's the disc. IF it doesn't, it's probably your TV. You can try to remove any other connections to the TV and see if it helps w/ only the DVD player connected.

Flotsam's right. Don't run the video output through any other components (VCR, etc.) plug that directly into the back of your TV. If you can avoid it don't use coax for DVD. Use an RCA output or, better yet, an S-Video output. I've never used component video ouputs (the one that has three separate plugs) so I couldn't tell you if that's your problem.

Also, as flotsam mentioned, you might want to asses your TV itself. Is it gettin' on in the years? If it is you might want to upgrade. I had to upgrade when I got my DVD player. I went out and got a moderately priced flat screen TV and the picture quality is wonderful...much better than a standard screen TV.

Good luck! Let us know if you get it working.

I had the same problem last year. Go to Radio Shack, and get an RF converter if you don't have S video output or RCA cable inputs.
