DVD-R or DVD+R

I recently bought a Sony DVD recorder for my PC. It's a 16x double layer +R/-R/+RW/-RW model.

I'm making back up copies (no, really!) of my children's DVDs, and keeping the originals safe. So when one gets scratched up, I can just burn a new copy.

I've found that the -R format works on our newer Philips DVD/VCR combo, but not on my older JVC model. After alot of internet searching, I found that the JVC XV-421 is not compatible with the -R, but is compatible with the +R.

Has anyone found DVD players that are not compatible with the -R format? I'm curious to find out.

Slightly offtopic: Pioneer was one of the few companies of the "minus" (R-/RW-) camp. The "minus" standard used to allow faster burning than "plus" (they are the same now) but "plus" allowed much faster rewriting/media formatting. "Minus"media used tobe cheaper too but difference is next to none now.

It is more likely that "minus" standard will end up in dustbin of history and "plus" standard (which has greater support ... and sales) will prevail. Whateve equipment you buy make sure it supports both (and if it doesn't support both standards for some reason do pick the "plus" variant).

Sorry for off-topic post but i think you (or others) might find this helpful.
